Dog chasing sheep.

DH and DD took our KCCS cross Bichon on a hill climb. The dog had a ball but on the way back he spotted two sheep and gave chase. It took them 5 minutes to get him back but what I want to know is! could the farmer have shot him bearing in mind the sheep had come out of their field and were straying on the hillside?

It's only recently we have let him off the lead but I think we will have to be more cautious in fixture.
