Hi DH has just registered our interest in a Yorkshire Terrier puppy. Have only had rescue collie X's before.
Does anyone have one or have any tips for me please? How small are they? How much excercise? Are they very social? TIA

no responses!? No tips - as I have not owned one but googling the breed sites is a great help.

I have a yorkie. He's now nearly 9; I got him as a puppy when dd was 4.

Like all little terriers, he is an absolute little sod Grin. He's a tiny dog with a HUGE attitude. He literally took 4 years to house train, and still pees up the open back door now and again just to remind me who's boss.

They're not particularly recommended as ideal pets for small children, but I made a point of taking him up to school as a puppy, and as such he is the most sociable little dog I've ever come across.

As far as size, he's particularly tiny - he weighs 5lbs - but most yorkies I've seen have been bigger/chunkier. It certainly doesn't stop him squaring up to the local rottweilers threatening to teach them a lesson though!

He does make an excellent watch dog and is incredibly protective. And he likes nothing more than cuddling up on my lap for a snuggle. As far as exercise goes, he's happy running round the garden after a ball, but then will happily go on a 15 mile hike through the countryside.

Any more questions, please ask!

I had a yorkie for 13 years. Sadly he had to be pts a few years ago, but he lived to the ripe old age of 14.

We got him before dd was born and he was great with her. Very patient, affectionate and never complained about dd pulling his tail!
He was a large yorkie (champion size) and was an all round fantastic dog for us.

Thank you for the replies, we have now googled the breed and it hasn't put us off at all. Kids are very excited, last dog was 8 when dd was born and was pts last year age 14.
All they have known is an old dog. The size of this dog is of great appeal so they will be able to hold the lead etc
Am getting quite excited now.
