I am spayed and microchipped tag

not me personally obviously.

Worth getting to go on the collar in addition to the name/address/phone number tag?

Do they think one would act as any sort of deterrent to a dog thief?

Just pondering really, sure I saw them mentioned on here a while ago.

I don't think it could possibly HURT!

It is a legal requirement to have a collar and tag with your name and address on it including postcode and I always include a mobile number. As per Control of dogs order 1992 the only exception are dogs who are actually working .

um

Yes I know that Lizcat, just wondering if an additional tag might be of any benefit.

Not certain what other tag you might need then? Sorry.

Ok sorry for being snippy.

I'm sure I read on here ages ago, or maybe it was on another dog forum that someone had gone to Timpsons or wherever and had a separate tag made to go on their dog's collar that said

I am spayed and microchipped

The theory being that a potential dog thief that might want your dog (for puppy farming purposes I presume) would see it and be put off for obvious lack of uterine reasons.

I have no idea how dog thieves minds work, do they case the joint as it were?
Anyway for the sake of a fiver and a 5 minute trip into the local key shop I wonder if it would be worth it, or a complete waste of time?

Our vets give them away free when they spay or microchip, so they must think it's worth it.

I think its a good idea, i once saw some (possibly ebay) that said spayed chipped and totally worthless.

Oh that is interesting Dooin and 3cutedarlings.

Obv if I got one I would not become lackadaisical wrt tying her up outside the pub and buggering off for a pint etc.

My dog's tag says "I am chipped", plus all the normal ID things.

Same as Mad, my dog's tag has name, number and postcode on one side and 'I have a microchip' on the other side. I didn't think about the spaying bit, but I don't know if a dognapper would get that close and bother to read tags if they were after her.

Not being a dognapper, like everyone else here, I don't know for definite, but it won't hurt the dog, won't cost you the bank, so there's no harm in doing so.

has anyone ever heard of dog thieves removing a microchip?

My girl wears a tag saying 'spayed and microchipped' (as well as one with our postcode and phone numbers.

I figure it can't do any harm

I've been told not to put the pup's name on, as it encourages finders to 'bond', and not hand them in.

Pickle's tag does say she's been chipped, gives the tracking company's number, as well as my phone number.

IlsaLund · 20/05/2011 22:13

We don't put the dog's name on the tag for the same reason.

Losing a dog is one of my biggest fears - why I have a naughty JRT who loves to scare me by running out of sight when we are in woods or fields is a mystery.

My tag gives our phone number ,home & mobile and on other side says ' Chipped' with our post code .

Can all get on one tag no need for two .

I dont think a thief will bother to check a tag before nicking a dog really , do you?

Dog will just end up being abandoned aanyway , doubt whether theif will hand it to police and say ' sorry dog not fit for purpose ', I would like to give it back ' Hmm

I finally got a tag for my dog. It contains address, postcode, landline and mobile number.

Report
WhereTheWildThingsWere · 21/05/2011 20:47

My tag says MICROCHIPPED and gives numbers for home, mobile and vets, it also says ALL VETS BILLS WILL BE PAID, just in case he was run over (for example) and someone was umming and ahhing about taking him to a vet.

I know someone who was stopped by a nice young man who spent a few minutes fussing her whippy, (and with hindsight, spent a lot of time fussing her neck and so checking her tag) she was stolen from their garden 4 hours later.

I would never have my dogs address on a tag.

Report
kid · 22/05/2011 09:32

I thought you had to have their address on their tag?
I never leave mine unattended in the garden anyway so I can't see him getting stolen from there, but it is a worry that someone would check out where you live and come and take your dog Sad

If you're not supposed to put their name on the tag, why does the PetsAtHome form I've just sent off, ask you the name? I filled it in without thinking properly, and the tag has come back with the name on it!
He's not going to be going anywhere in the short-term, until all jabs complete, and I can always get a new one made if necessary.

i have my landline and mobile numbers on one side and 'i am chipped' on the other. i dont have my address. i know it is a legal requirement but i am not prepared to risk having the address on there. i always have my mobile with me so if dog was lost i could be contacted straight away. i have only recently put 'i am chipped' on there after hearing about dog wardens not automatically scanning lost dogs. i dont know if it will make a difference but cant hurt

clam - if you did want to order new tags ebay is considerably cheaper than pets at home. we have been buying ours from same seller (and buying lots for friends) for £1.80 inc p&p per tag. this includes text on both sides. they have a wide range of styles and colours. even got some for son's belongings as he has a habit of losing stuff. though didnt put 'i am chipped' on those Grin

wildthings - that is a shocking and very sad story

Both my dogs have 'I am chipped' on the back of their contact tags, and my big girl has always had 'I am spayed and chipped' even before she was (puppy boy is very obviously not packing testicles!). They're both really beautiful pedigree hounds and - although that doesn't make them any more "precious" than the next adored Heinz mutt - I've always dreaded them being stolen for breeding purposes. I can't see that it does any harm and might just put someone off - who knows?

chicken: what about just putting the postcode? Would that cover it, do you reckon?

My dogs all have a pet 24 tag. It means you dont have to have your details on display as it is logged with the company. If you combine it with the Vet24 as we do it means that your dog will recieve any emergency vet treatment needed whilst they are trying to track you down. It does cost us £10-15 per year but it is worth it and has proved usefull on 4-5 occasions already.
