I'm looking after my folks dog while they're away on holiday. He's a 1 year old Golden Retriever and very prone to picking up ticks. He had a treatment at the vets which means that when they attach, they feed, ad eventually die and drop off. The thing has been on there all day and still hasn't come off and I'm way too squeamish to take it out. How long will it take to come off, does anyone know?

It's a shame cos I won't let him come sit with me in the lounge til it comes off cos I don't want the thing on my carpets. I hate ticks. Ugh, yuk.

I bought a tick remover for £3.50, one of the best "dog things' I have ever had. They came in a pack of 2, one small one larger. Brilliant, very easy and very effective.
They are shaped a bit like the 'foot' bit on a sewing machine. And I have been told that a sewing machine foot works too.
exactly like these ones but didn't get them from there.

I also have those tick removers and they're really easy to use - you just have to get over the squealing like a girl bit (I was a complete wuss the first few times I had to do this, but I had a cat once who used to roam far and wide and bring more than her fair share of ticks home with her so I just had to get over it and discovered it's really quick and easy to do... Then I flush the little buggers down the loo so there's no way they can come back! It's oddly satisfying.)

So yeah; go find one of these and suggest your folks hold on to it if the dog's quite prone to ticks, as it's better to be rid of them quickly than to let them feed and drop off wherever. That would gross me out all the more; random dead ticks lying around the house. Definitely better to remove them quickly IMO.

I found one of those things amongst his stuff. I was very brave and managed to get it off today Grin. He is now allowed in the lounge!

Thanks for the advice, it was me being girly that was the hardest thing!
