Anyone else see this BBC 4 Monday night ? Very moving. Astonishing how the old couple still live in such poverty.

I'm watching on delay. They're in New York now - such a lovely open couple despite their limited experience in life. She's never been through a tunnel!

I saw this documentary and was very affected by this old couple. They are a dying breed, and we will be at the loss when they go. I am Irish and while this type of living is rare now, folks like this do exist, and we have to cherish them. They are the epitome of simple, plain living. It might look like poverty at the superficial level but deep down they must lead a very rich life inside, and there is probably an element of choice in how they live. They are in a little time warp, but at the same time they are timeless. Their views were so enlightened and thoughtful especially when confronted with the gay issue, and they seemed totally unaffected by the prejudices and nastiness of modern life.

I have relatives in Ireland who live very simple lives like this and I have visited very similar looking cottages. But as PP says ,there is an element of choice in this. They live near a town that can supply more up to date things if they wanted them. They just dont want them.

It was a lovely programme and interesting from so many angles.

I loved the way their New York cousin was delighted by them and called them an " Old World couple".

I knew old people who lived like this in rural England in the 1980's but didn't expect it in 2015.

I watched this last night. I absolutely love the elderly couple and they were the real stars of the programme, weren't they? What a fab couple. In a way, shame cos the whole issue of the adopted lady and the scandals and intolerance around it in society at the time became peripheral, negligible even. I really felt for her.

But that couple in New York ...glorious! And she wore her teeth for special occasionsSmile

Is it really that easy to get a passport there? Well impressed.
