1/4 - Blame

The series featuring Alan Davies as a loose-cannon lawyer returns after proving a hit first time around. If you remember, this is the drama that asks us to feel sympathy for a high-flying barrister called Henry Farmer because he's a wee bit strapped for cash. Henry's case tonight involves a rail crash for which the train driver is being accused of manslaughter. Cross-examining a victim's mother, Henry is all sympathy. "Nobody can underestimate the horror and grief you must have felt at that time," he says. Either he means "overestimate" or he's being rather cruel. Maybe that's why he's poverty stricken - he's a barrister who keeps saying the opposite of what he means. And as if the threat of bankruptcy isn't enough, a pet rabbit has been eating Henry's wig.

2/4 - Lack of Affect

Henry Farmer's case this week involves a young man called Dan with Asperger's syndrome who, the evidence suggests, has killed his own mother. Dan (excellently played by Tom Burke) is said to have problems with human emotions, but he's not the only one. The QC for whom Henry is working on the case is a charmless swine who once went out with Henry's boss, Cleo, and if anyone's got problems with emotions it's clearly him. The scene where Dan candidly points this out is a treat. Meanwhile, Henry and his new flatmate, Millie, are becoming more attached, only poor Henry's so hard up he hasn't even got the money to buy her a Chinese takeaway. However, Henry teaches his son (who lives in Australia) poker over the internet, which given the disastrous way we saw Henry play last week, may not bode well for the youngster's pocket money.
