repeating AS level

Dd is doing AS levels at 6th form college but she has really struggled with two of her four subject choices, and now has really messed up an important piece of coursework in her best subject, English. Ideally she would really like to repeat the whole year having realised just what was expected of her, and with a better choice of subjects. She is hoping to go to uni eventually but doesn't really know yet what she wants to study. Is there any chance her college will let her start the year again? or do they only allow that where a student has a more genuine reason to repeat eg through prolonged illness etc. I have made an appointment to discuss things with her tutor later this week.

If she is planning to go to uni then it would 'look better' if there was a specific reason for the repeated year. Changing subjects is a clear case of this and I'd suprised if her college has a problem with this.

I know children who have done this for the same reasons as your dd redsky. I guess it's down to the discretion of the school if they allow it on a case by case basis.

thanks for these responses. Let's hope her tutor agrees to a re-try, with a more mature approach from dd next time. She has been very late handing in projects and has tried to get away with doing the minimum amount of work but she really wants to do a lot better.

I had no idea that it was possible to repeat a year ( nothing like that in my day - aged crone emoticon ).
School never mentioned it ,but now DS is repeating year 13 .
Wish I had known ,as think would have made more sense to repeat year 12.
Fed up with school - new Academy and all they seem to care about is increasing GCSE results ,sixth form seems neglected to me .

My son started again after a disastrous AS year.
He basically chose the wrong subjects for 2 of his AS levels. The college allowed him to start again, continuing with the one he was good at and another 2 subjects. He is now at Uni - just completing his first year.
My daughter, on the other hand, at a different college, asked to do the same after realising that she had made poor choices for her abilities, but was refused. She changed college and is now doing very well.
So really it is down to policy at the college.

It depends on the college. But is there anywhere else she could do AS levels? Is this the best college for her?
Because some colleges are very grown up and at 16 some just aren't mature enough yet to take that much responsibility. Some sixth forms in school are more pro-active and inolved. I hae known quite a few pupils go to the shiny sixth form college, but then transfer back to their old school sixth form because they weren't coping.
