Holiday jobs

What kind of job, if any, can my 14yo Ds get this summer? I need some good ideas please.

He has been offered some babysitting for a 9 yo but this would be occasional.

We are in central London, I thought of leafleting any idea if this is legal under 16?

newspaper delivery is legal from 13 onwards so i would imagine leafleting would be simliar

There are strict restrictions on the number of hours a child under school leaving age can work so I imagine it would be difficult to find anything to be honest other than a few hours on a Saturday or delivering newspapers.

Can he do a bit of car washing or gardening for friends/neighbours? It is difficult to get much at 14 TBH.

Hi onegiantleap, my DD1 (now 16) started working when she was 13. She got a job in a local kids' Playbarn - you know the sort of thing, soft play, ball pits and a cafe. She had to clean up (including the loos), serve paninis and drinks to the parents etc. She got £20 for a 6-hour day. The following summer, at age 14 she got a job in the kennels in the next village. Again, it was pretty hard physical work, lots of cleaning and of course dog walking.

Other ideas are things like working at market gardens etc.

As islandofsodor says, there are quite strict restrictions, you'll have to fill out a form and get his school to sign it, you have to sign it and the employer has to sign it to state what hours he's done - they can do more during the school holidays than in term time, obviously.

Good luck! I still think babysitting is the best bet, easy work (if you get well-behaved kids) for quite a lot of money.

I worked in a shop that employed 14 yr olds. But not many shops do this due to restrictions. I think the shop I worked for didn't care.

Perhaps a hobby or interest she has could give ideas for type of work, or looking ahead to the type of career she wants.
