Daughter has trouble making friends

My daughter is nearly 17 and has always had the problem of making friends. She left school this year and has started at college. She hangs around with a group at college but doesn't see them at all outside of it. She is always at home and I think it's making her depressed.
It was the same in the summer, she never saw any of her friends from school. She says she makes an effort, texting people etc but they dont reply or if she gets friendly with someone they always drop her and go off with someone else.
I really don't know what to suggest, I feel so upset for her and don't want it to be like this all through her life.

It is hard. I would suggest getting involved in something that really interests her and hopefully meet like minded people or volunteer for something. There is no reason for her always to be like it. I have known people find the teen years difficult and be fine later on.
