A bloody badger has killed our guinea pigs! :(

Yesterday I went to put our gp's in their run, to find the door of their cage smashed in. One had vanished and the other was dead in the cage. I couldn't work out what had attacked them. I thought their cage was secure and although they go out in a run during the day, we always put them in their cage at night.
Last night when I arrived home, as I pulled onto our drive, a badger ran out the gate. I checked on our rabbits (different cage, which we've now secured to the max). They were fine.
But at about 1am, I heard some clonking outside, I shone a torch outside and saw the bloody badger trying to get in the rabbit pen. I raced outside and it obviously legged it and bought the rabbits in.

So every night the rabbits are now sleeping in a dog crate. Not ideal but I'm just too worried to put them outside at night. I've never known a badger to attack caged animals!!

This is the first time I've ever heard of a badger attacking guinea pigs .

This has made me slightly worried. I think my hutch is secure. Did they open the door somehow or did they literally push through the door?

A badger ate my rabbits when I was 11. Bashed the cage doors through. It was horrible. It wasn't scared off, either, and even the dog wouldn't go near it. I'd definitely keep the rabbits inside. The mess was scarring.

I'm terrified of foxes but TBH , I've only seen the odd dead badger on the A12 or A127 (I suppose they were trying to cross). They are well armed though, even a dog would be at risk from a badger.

Poor guineas, and YY keep the rabbits secure, now you know this particular predator can get into your garden.

I was hanging washing out in the week, about 7am, I saw something (thought it was a neighbours cat) bloody Fox on the path large as life. We have high fences but they can jump them.

I'd have automatically blamed a fox too. Badgers are scarier than foxes.

I've never heard of badgers attacking guineas or rabbits either but they are nasty pieces of work. So sorry, OP. Poor little pigs

My piggies love inside due to badger threat. Had my previous pair outside, loads of noise in the night, ran out and he was trying to break into the cage. It wasn't even scared when I threw a bucket at it. Finally scared it off with a huge broom and yelling.
The next day my neighbour was distraught, her cat had had kittens a few Weeks before and a badger had got in through the cat flap that night and killed all the kittens in the kitchen, the mummy cat had to be put to sleep later that morning.
Now all my pets live inside.

What horrible discoveries you have made ???? Are there such things as badger traps?

Badgers are very protecting. You can get in trouble for as much as swearing at the things.

Yep, the flap was set shut due to the kittens but the plastic was shattered.

Our rabbits looked really glum when we bought them in, so we've had to really step up the security outside.
So as well as being in a wooden Wendy house with a large wire run, that's dug in the ground (used to have chickens in it). We have also erected a sheep netting style electric fence which goes the whole round their enclosure. We switch it on in the early evening and it's off again come the morning.
Fortunately we live on a farm so have been able to use it (very expensive). And, so far no badgers. i haven't seen it, so not sure if it's been back or not.

I have had guinea pigs/rabbits for most of my life and have never ever known a badger to attack them in a secure cage before. Even my dh who is a farmer was convinced it was a fox.

Toad, the door to the cage was pushed in. Almost as if the badger had run up and head butted it.

That's actually quite scary. It means that no matter how much you secure the door so they can't open it they can still get in.

I have had Rabbits for 12 years. Then last night a Badger tried to get into the hutch. Have never had this happen before !!. I was wondering whether it is because we have had a lot of snow, and they can't get to their usual food ?. I am worried it will happen again. Although I have blocked were it came in from ? X
