Now the newbie pigs are munching their way through lovely fresh grass in a regular basis they are weeing a lot more. Nothing unexpected about this, apart from the fact they seem to save it up to do once they're back in their house! I put down a good thick layer of newspaper and hay, but every day it's soaked through, so hot water scrubbing is necessary. Does anyone have any ideas for protecting the base of their house, on the lines of cut to fit mahoosive Tena Lady?

Piggies like to save a bit to decorate a freshly cleaned out cage. First thing my boys do when put back in a lovely clean house is to run round peeing madly (if they run and pee they can anoint more groundConfused).

I have no solution. I just have 2 smelly boys and a cage I have to clean daily and steam clean weekly.

Ho hum. 'Twas worth an ask, thanks Fernie. And to think I used to worry about them not drinking enough!

My sows are piddly devils too clippity

I've tried all sorts (not liquorice allsorts but Hey ! , I'll try anything )

At the moment, the piggies have a good layer of 'small animal friendly' wood cat litter (from The range, big yellow bag) under newspaper then hay on top. I roll up the paper and hay, any peed litter goes crumbly like bran, can be scooped up.
Some cat litter stinks before it's even used.

I've bought a bag of Megazorb for warmer weather. they won't need hay to sleep in, but they'll still need soft and cosy (hay can go in a rack or cardboard tubes to eat, otherwise they bury themselves in hay and cook Hmm )

One thing I've noticed in the Boars v Sows; boars are a bit 'boary' smelling (it's not an unpleasant smell at all) but sows pee rivers.

Mine will bond in 2 weeks time, we're going to keep them in the Pighouse rather than the garage, so I'll give them the Megazorb to try out then.

When we had GP1 (our very boary boar) he'd pee and his cagemate walked through it Confused

Boars like to leave a 'marking' pee as soon as their rumps touch the clean paper. Sows can pee a jet of wee behind them (so walls, other pigs, nothing is safe)

Thank you, I've got loads of wood shaving stuff which I was advised to put them on until you lovely lot put me right. I'll try that between the newspaper with a layer of nice soft tootsie-friendly hay on top. Then when the weather warms up try the Megazorb. There's no smell, thank goodness, just sooo much wee. Just wait, there'll be a big display in P@H Pamper Piggy Pads and someone'll make a mint.

I use Fitch which you have to buy online, it's made from paper and is lovely and soft on their feet. The bed still gets pretty wet though thanks to one of our sows who drinks a lot. The other one hardly ever drinks but as she's still alive (and enormous!) I assume she gets enough water from her food.
