I have too many clothes. Even now, many many years after leaving uni,I still find it hard to throw stuff away - a throwback to the time when I couldn't afford nice new clothes that often. Where/how do I start???

Try it on

Does it fit?
Does it look good?
When did you last wear it?
Do you have anything to wear it with/to?

If you are stuggling to answer these questions - time to let it go!

Mostly it all fits; I just have this 'one day it'll come back in' mentality, or know as soon as I bin it I'll want it back. It's daft - I think I'm going to be ruthless and really really pare it down.

That's what I need - someone who has no emtional attachment to my old clothes! An example is a lovely old shirt I have - I maybe wear it twice a year just around the house but it's now so old I can't bear to bin it. Weird thig is, with my work clothes I have no problem, it's the casual stuff that lurks.

if you really can't bear to get rid of it then stick it in a bag and bung it somewhere, then if you haven't gone looking for it after a pre-defined period (6m? 1 year if extremely hard) then goodbye clothes.

could you sell any of it?

I have just one rule - if it has not been worn in the last 12 months - bin it or charity shop it.

I'm going to do an intial sift tomorrow - I think the time has come to say to myself keep, say, 10 items you love, the rest is for the charity shop. This is what comes of having a tiny house but with fantastic storage cupboards....I think the last owner must have had the same issues!

don't be completely ruthless though annabel, i have got rid of stuff which have later regretted. hence 6m bag rule (i have a loft and a cellar so can afford to do this).

there is nothing wrong with having an old shirt tha tyou wear twice a year. having 15 old shirts that you never wear is not good though.
