Why does my makeup look caked on by the end of the night?

Last night I went to a party. when I left home, I was really pleased with my makeup, looked natural but covered up the dark circles under my eyes. I use primer, tinted moisturiser and concealer. So why did I find it looking caked on and blotchy under the eyes only, by midnight? How can I stop this please?
