Need a light/mid weight jacket for OZ in their (pretend) winter

Apparently it will be mild during the day but temp drops to around 10degrees in the evening so I think I need something to wear over top when we go out, I'm not very stylish, large size 14, reasonable norkage. Warm Autumn colours apparently --but will never stop wearing black whatever the stylist said-- A blazer? A quilted jacket? Biker? I might end up looking a right dork with too many zips and bits! A more casual option would be good as then could wear during the day if necessary.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, TIA :)

Which part are you going to? Are you sure its only going to drop to 10'?

It gets very cold at night. If you were home the heating would be on. Take lots of layers. As for a jacket you would probably be ok with a quilted jacket. I lived in Perth and we would have frost overnight.

Could you give dates and place? Australia is a continent as well as a country. Smile

Was about to come on to say the same - have spent a few cold and wet winters in Melbourne - you ll need layers, and possibly waterproofs depending on where you re going.

I was home last week...

I wore shorts and a tee shirt in Brisbane (26 deg)

My London wool winter coat in Melbourne & Sydney (11 & 13 deg)

Blazer or leather jacket will do you at night up north; take a winter coat for down south. There's no central heating. It also poured with rain: take some waterproof boots.

I've been in Melbourne at Christmas and foolishly didn't take anything bigger than a Cardigan and regretted it. I had to borrow hoodies from my nephew.

I've just bought a parka in the Next sale for my Melbourne trip this month. It was chuffing cold last time I went in August! I think I got away with a leather jacket in Sydney during the day, but still needed to rug up in the evenings.

Sorry! We will be in Queensland - Broadbeach - for first two weeks of Aug. I've looked at the annual average temps plus asked on the Living Overseas board so I was confident of the temps and need for something jacket like, its finding a decent, somewhat stylish, practical and goes with everything option that alludes me!

We used to holiday in broadbeach in August. It does get cold enough for a jumper/light jacket in the evenings, especially if it's cloudy /rainy. You won't need anything too heavy though.

Australia is a continent?

I though Australasia was. Someone with kiwi in their username probably means they're going to Australia when they say Australia. Wink

Disclaimer: fully appreciate Australia-the-country is huge and varied.

Back on topic, friends just got back from the Gold Coast, and it was chilly in the evenings, and even a bit cool around the pool during the day sometimes. A light Kathmandu-type jacket?

Australia is a continent and an island.

Anyhoo, the weather is lovely during the day. I wore shorts and a singlet yesterday and was slightly burnt. Evenings however required jeans and a jacket. If you get here I'd pop over to Pacific Fair or Robina and grab what clothes you need. Cardigan, long sleeved shirt and blazer will cover all weather extremes
August is the month the westerly winds kick in. The winds blow right through you. Are you going to the Ekka while you're in town? We had a unit in Broadbeach, right next to the beach. The Cuban restaurant is nice.

We are staying at the Air on Broadbeach, super excited!? So glad to hear it will be warm enough to enjoy the days, jeans and jacket in the evening is fine with me but since we are only going for 2wks I don't think there will time for shopping I need to take everything with me.

Looks like I'll have to trust my own judgement in finding something!

I'm off to Google Ekka!

Good place to stay. There are shops below the hotel (supermarket, chemist etc). If you are looking for places to eat then the Moroccan restaurant, the seafood restaurant near the merry go round (carousel), surf club and barvarian beer garden are good.

The Ekka will cost you a small fortune but if you want a fun day out and see a huge variety of things then go.

Not sure you've had an answer to your question but from experience try two places Uniqlo (their puffas are perfect and in the sale) or something like this from Topshop - enjoy!

You won't need a puffa or parka (although I'd love that Topshop right now in Melbourne alfie). What sort of thing would you wear the jacket with - ie what's your style? There are a lot of light jackets in places like warehouse and oasis atm. I'm in melbourne which is quite different climate-wise (and style-wise) to QLD, but a lot of ppl are wearing those kimono style jackets, drapey cardigans or simple slouchy knits when the weather is less than freezing. If you want something easy, just throw in a couple of cardigans (maybe a black one and neutral one?) and maybe a ponte blazer to cover you if it's chilly (there are navy and black ones avail at warehouse and oasis)
