Vest tops / strappy tops. Is it just me?

The recent spate of hot weather has made me realise that nearly all my vest tops / strappy tops.are too low cut on me! (I haven't really had the opportunity to wear them much before this year due to crappy Welsh weather and pregnancy.)

It seems to be that all the straps are too long. As if I'm abnormally proportioned from shoulder to bust! And yet nearly all my tops with sleeves are fine... :-/ Can only think of one that isn't...

Does anyone else find this?

Think I'm going to have to dig out a needle and cotton or fill a charity bag... :-/

Yes, but I am short in the body.

It's not too bad with a vest as they are easy to shorten, but t shirts with scoop or v necks are inevitably indecent and have to be worn with a camisole underneath.

annoying

I buy camisole tops with adjustable (thin) straps, from eg. Boden. Don't tend to wear vest type tops with thicker straps for this very reason!

Me too, I've taken to shortening them or buying ones with adjustable straps.

You are not the only one, it frustrates me so much.

I too search for adjustable straps now but the ones I find are always a lot more expensive.

I'm quite square shouldered and not short bodied, and I still find this. The only ones I can wear are adjustable strap ones - kettlewell ones are good (£££ but last well).

I have the same problem, even petite fittings are too low for me sometimes, I usually sew the straps, it only takes a few minutes.

Yes , had this exact conversation with my friend on holiday last week when wearing new vest tops.. All the straps are too long, which makes the armpit holes seem too big - constantly flashing my bra at the sides. Need to so some sewing. I'm quite petite, but sure it wasn't like this before Confused - my older vest tops don't have this problem so why have the manufacturers started making the straps so long?

I hate to say it, but the Boden ones are pretty good.

I've not got on well with the Next strappy tops, even the ones from their petite range. And I am not petite. I just don't like flashing my bra.

M&S do good strappy vests (adjustable).

yes me to but I am only 5'2" so thought perhaps its my height.

Hoorah! I thought it was just me that cut the and stitched all my vest top straps. I am v booby, I thought that was the problem.

Jacksterbear · 07/08/2013 21:34

Omg yes! And I am long in the body (although 5'6", I have to wear short length trousers!) making it doubly annoying as tops are usually too short at the waist/hips as it is!

It isn't just vest/strappy tops. Far too many lot of tops are just too low cut for me. As I have a small bust they just look awful on me so I wear them with a camisole underneath, which spoils the look a little.

Ah yes, same problem with vests. Also what do you all do bra wise? Not keen on having bra straps on show, don't like the bras with the see through plastic straps and have yet to find a comfortable strapless bra.

It's nothing to do with height. The disproportion is caused by a shorter space between the bust and chin! I have the same problem and often have to wear a vest to avoid flashing too much.

Vest tops with built in bras are the best option if strapless don't work, but can be pricey.

I have loads of Primark vests with adjustable straps. I bought them a size up to get extra length (and cos norks are massive) love them great.

Went there today to replenish (I suffer from the holey thing at the waist) and they had none in any colour above a 10-12. None. Nada.

I loudly declared Primark to be shite (dd1 slunked off in embarrassment) and flounced.

So... Where now for vests for £3?

I shorten all my vests too, I think it's becuase I have my G-cups hoiked up so much. And I recently attacked a White stuff scoop top and put extra gathers in the centre front to reduce the too-low scoop neck.

Dresses and summer tops aren't very cool if you have to layer up with a camisole.

In terms of straps I just leave them on view or don't wear shoestring tops depending on the occasion.

Well I'm glad it's not just me, though that doesn't solve the problem...

I have this problem too! I thought it was just me because I am petite and have small boobs.
Why do shops do this? Is it some new fashion for having half your bra sticking out? Grin

That reminds me DD1 wants the straps on her camisole shortening.

So no OP it isn't only you.

I burn very badly, so usually stick to Tshirts, but I also have vests and shoestring PJ tops that have this problem.

thenightsky · 07/08/2013 23:19

I've always had this problem and I'm 5ft 9in. I always have to sew tucks in the straps, or just cut them and re-sew them back on.

NoComet · 07/08/2013 23:19

Small boobs certainly don't help. Tunic I had on today (whitestuff) is 1mm from showing my bra.

Why on earth does the scooped neck need to be so deep.

Oh just remembered, DD2(12) and slight has a size 6 Primark top which cost £2.50 and has proper adjustable straps. I haven't had to alter it and she had no boobage to speak of.
