Please help me choose between 2 down filled coats!

Ok, I have to have one of these, but there's a fairly steep price gap between the two, so it's pulling my head apart.

Here is the first, the expensive one:

www.zalando.co.uk/tommy-hilfiger-greenwich-down-coat-blue-to121h00a-503.html

Can also see it modeled at the Hilfiger site in a diff colour here:

uk.tommy.com/Maine/1M87616096,en_GB,pd.html&cgid=101000#!color%3D939_CHOCOLATE_TORTE%26i%3D2

I Love the length (perfect for me) and the style, looks so warm and durable.

And here is the less expensive one, a tad but shorter (or is the model just super tall??) and not as 'shaped' as the first coat...but lovely hood and looks fairly durable:

It's killing me, what would you do?
I would intend this to last a long time, so a bit of an investment.

Have you tried either of them on?

I'm afraid not! Can't locate the Wrangler coat anywhere other than Asos.

I'd go for something tried and tested from an outdoors outfitters, not a fashion company. If you want it to be truly warm , and truly waterproof, that is - and I would if I were spending that much.

The 'warm and waterproof' thread ladies could probably give you chapter and verse on coats which tick all the boxes, including good looks.

Thanks Carole - I have just been looking at the thread.
What worries me is my narrow shoulders and small chest (usually have to opt for a 6 in coats and the more outdoors-y brands are often too large).

The fashion brands tend to make them a bit smaller, so I think this is why i'm drawn....

Apparently Merell come up small ...

I did like the Merell Insulated in navy, but can't find any online at the mo. Was so passionate about a faux fur trim to hood, too....

Will keep looking!

i like the wrangle one, lovely colour and the fur looks good. i know it's shorter but it will still keep you cosy.

Love the first one - it looks really warm and stylish. As long as you don't mind that it's not waterproof. Why not order and try on .... you can always send it back . If you like it .... go for it!!

big fan of the Hilfiger one, am tempted myself!

The first one looks warmer. The second one looks thin in comparison.

Still upset by the loss of my Joules Belmont parka last year: the padding came apart in the wash and formed into hard balls randomly throughout the coat. At the time I asked them to help and was told to put it in drier with tennisballs - which did not help. Was refused replacement or refund, even though I had followed guidelines to the letter. Will not go back there! I have noticed there are no customer reviews this year, too......./rant

Just in case anyone is thinking of the Belmont for this winter...be aware.

I also prefer the Hilfiger one, especially a version selling through Next, which is out of stock in my size.

toasted, I also have the belmont and also stuck it in the wash, it went flat after and I then took it to a local prof laundery service (NOT a dry cleaners) and they dried it, came back perfect! Its currently hanging in my spare room waiting to be worn this winter.

I love the Hilfiger ones, have been looking for the same myself. The Wrangler one isn't down filled is it? I've found a few in a similar style but they are often not down filled. North Face do a couple of similar jackets but they are more expensive again.

Will be watching with interest...

exercisejunkie Thanks for the info, I wish I had hung onto it, but was so furious at the time that I just wanted it out of my life. Not as keen on the new Belmont either, but still miss the first Sad

Mmmchampagne I like the North Face arctic parka, but worried it may be too long, perhaps also a bit over what I am prepared to spend, too. Was surprised to see almost a £100 difference between the black and navy version on one website.
Weird...the Wrangler says hand wash only.

Does it have to have a fur collar? I've just bought two Blush from Uniqlo

this one

They are fitted at the waist and really light but seem pretty warm - at least so far - and are a lot cheaper!

I've ordered this Boden one which looks v similar to the Hilfiger one in the blue.

Report
ToastedTeacakes · 28/09/2012 12:47

The Boden version is lovely! I need to take a closer look at that (hoping it isn't too long for me)..

And it definitely has to have the furry collar, it's like this hurdle I can't get past.

Have you looked at the Aigle Cuckmere one?

allnewtaketwo Another beauty! I am perplexed by the colours though...is 'night' blue or black?

OK, I'm in love with this Cuckmere thing. Price is worrying, but ooooh. Has anyone had experience with this coat? Washable? Would it be too long on a 5'4 person? Is it a small or generous fit?

This website has my size

I've got one! The Night is black in all but name imo!

I'm the same height as you. Is about knee length maybe just above can't remember. It's nice because of the belted waist. Hood is detachable.

Fit is true to size imo

I figured I will have it years. Was so super toasty last year. I preferred it to arctic parka due to belted waist/fitted shape, so less michelin shape!

Can't remember if washable. I just wiped mud off iirc and came up fine. Didn't need to wash it yet.

I've tried the tommy hilfiger one on last year. I found it for £120 tommy hilfiger discount store. It was lovely and warm. I'm 5.4 and size 8/10 and tried the 8. It fitted well and was really warm.

The only reason I didn't go for it though was because I wanted a waterproof/resistant one. The same reason I returned the Belmont from joules. I ended up with a lands end one. It's really warm but isnt as nice looking as the tommy one.

ToastedTeacakes · 29/09/2012 00:03

I'm glad the fit is good, and also to hear that it is warm! I hadn't actually thought about water resistance...showerproof will probably do for me, I think. I am most concerned with the hood 'staying up' in a gale force deluge, keeping my hair dry, really. My ears ache so much even in cold winds.

Am currently considering the Boden Stockholm (love the toggles at the hood, vital details!) or the Hilfiger. Stuck now between the two!
