DIY vintage hairstyle

I have poker straight medium length hair but I would really like to have a bit of volume and a better groomed look for a forthcoming wedding and was thinking of doing some waves. There seem to be lots of tutorials out there but has anyone got a tried and tested one? I don't have curling tongs or rolls but do have pins and rags to improvise with.

I will need to trial run it first as I don't want to end up looking like a poodle on the day.
