Black trousers & brown shoes - acceptable or not??

Have bought the most gorgeous pair of tan shoes this weekend and really want to wear them for work. However, the only smart trousers that fit me at the moment are black (I have a navy pair that will fit when I lose about 10lb Wink) - would they be ok if my top was brown-based (such as a animal print top) or are brown shoes and black trousers a definite no-no?

No. Not ever IMO.

Probably not ok, but I did it this winter - had bought some beautiful brown boots and only had black work trousers. Paired it with a brown shirt and just went with it. I figure so long as you're comfortable in what you're wearing you can get away with a few 'ill-advised' fashion choices!

Tan shoes are fine with black. In fact I think they're positively chic for being unexpected.

Brown shoes, no.

Depends on the shade. Dark brown and black looks wrong, but you might get away with tan.

I have a pair of tan shoes with black detailing that go with black trousers.

If you can wear them with the same colour belt and handbag then you're rocking it!

Yes, agree - if they really are tan, not brown, and you pick it up somewhere else - though I personally wouldn't go for both belt AND bag - and they're stylish trousers anyway, it's fine.

Am wondering now what is classed as 'tan' and what is 'brown' now Confused!!

There would be no belt on show but I do have a matching handbag.

IMO tan shoes with black trousers are still a no no. I wear mine with either beige or navy

Navy shoes with black trousers? Interesting Grin.

Cee - brown is chocolate coloured (milk or dark!) Tan is sort of err...suntan coloured? Except suntan coloured for me is crimson with a yellow haze Sad

I also wondered that about navy shoes and black trousers - now I would never do that Wink

I think they would be described as 'tan' then as I have never seen any chocolate that looks the same colour as them Wink

Maybe I should just do it - if I hold my head up high, nobody will comment will they??

Brown and black is one of the best combinations ever (like red and hot pink, or teal and mustard). It will just depend on the shade, the style of the black you are wearing and I'm not sure it's best exemplified with shoes and trousers, more on the top. I depends on the texture, and how the light hits each fabric.

Black and navy similarly an undermined seam of style.

If they're the colour of Caramac then they're fine with black and even finer with a leopard print top too. Any other brown though and it's a 'NO'.
Navy and black is never ok no matter the shade.

Well, I don't see anything criminal in that, but still, I know that wearing black trousers with black shoes isn't ok.

Confused

Yes.

Match or don't match. NOBODY CARES, except a few people on MN. I have never met anybody in real life who would care if your bag, shoes and belt matched, or if they didn't. For what it's worth, I like black with tan.

Navy and black can absolutely work - depends on shades/textures but it really can.

My first day of a new job, someone was wearing black trousers with brown shoes. Get in, I thought, no stress over matchyness!!! Best office i ever worked in.

Be that person who wears what they like, and encourage the newbies not to pay heed to silly fashion rules too.

I love tan with black. Shoes, or coat or jumper or whatever. It is a great combo.

I wear black trousers and tan boots all the time, didn't think it was cutting edge but nor did I think it was a particular fashion faux pas. I personally hate black shoes and boots so never wear them.
