Calling all greasy skin owners-what products do you use?

My skin is like a oil slick at the moment,I get occasional breakouts on hairline and chin mainly.
I also have quite large pores on cheeks and forehead.

I used this during the summer months and my skin seem to love it but now it's not helping.

I need a good cleanser, toner and exfoliator pore reduction and I've never regularly used a moisturiser so I probably should invest in a decent one for oily skin.

I'd relish a recommendation for a good foundation too as I've been using Clinique Superfit for years and I think my skin and I fancy a change.

I am going to watch this thread with interest as I suffer from greasy nose, forehead and chin.

I have this week discoverd the wonder of Boots No7 Primer which you wear under foundation - in my case on my shiney nose. It stops my foundation sliding off and the shiney nose look. Had makeup on for 14 hours the other day and only had a very very light shine on the nose at the end of it!

I have really greasy skin and hair and prone to spots.

I was recommeneded the oil cleansing method on here but it didn't really work for me but you could try it.

What I have found out is that exfoliating should be avoided if you have greasy skin and since I stopped my skin is MUCH better. If you have to then do it maybe once a week.

Make sure all products and make up are oil-free.

I now use a simple cleanser like clean and clear for oily skin and I use freederm moisturiser for spot prone skin and it is fab!!

I now also use L'oreal studio secrets primer and it is gorgeous.

Everyday powder I use superdrug Miss Sporty medicated powder for spotty skin and collection 2000 concealer.

If I'm going out or having a really bad day I use Lancome foundation and it is truly brilliant and seems to keep my skin matte which is rare as normally as soon as I wear foundation my skin is shiny.

My skin sounds very similar to yours and to be honest, I find it really hard to find products that a)don't make me immediately get more spots/a delightful rash or b)don't cost a fortune.

So, from a fairly budget point of view, this is what I use as a cleanser every day
I absolutely swear it has made a massive difference to my skin - not half as many breakouts as before.

I use this Olay moisturiser and think it really does the trick. It has quite a matt finish as well, obviously helps to combat that really attractive oily look!

Can't really recommend any foundations - don't use them (too freckly for it to ever look 'natural'!)Smile

I use Clinique 3-step products, and especially like the oil-free moisturising gel.

If you visit their website, you can do an on-line consultation to work out what might suit you...

I feel naked if I don't wear foundation,it's a must for me as my skin is so bloody dire at the moment.

I've seen Freederm products so will look into their moisturiser.I must admit to using moisturiser about 4 times in my whole life (am 34 now) eeeek! It just seems to sit on my skin and makes the oil problem bigger.

The NUDE oil cleanser that I used was wonderful in the summer as my skin seems to clear up with the sun and almost becomes normal

The freederm moisturiser is not expensive so well worth trying. They also do a small tube of gel stuff you can put on first if you have bad outbreaks and that really works too. I use it sometimes- mainly overnight.

Problem is if you don't moisturise your skin produces more oil to try and moisturise it itself IYSWIM. It will take a few days at least to see if it's working.

Drinking loads of water helps too- something I'm really bad at.

We are hopefully emigrating to Oz soon so hopefully my skin will be better!

See, I don't wear foundation but I DO wear about ten tons of concealor liberally pasted all over the offending grotty spots.(also 34 and sometimes feel like my skin is never going to catch up to the fact that this oily skin thing is so teenage..)

I know what you mean about the sunny weather - if only I could bear to ever go out without make up on at all. I'm sure that would help at least a little bit!

thatsnotmymonster - interesting what you said about exfoliating - it's been the opposite for me, I use that Simple stuff every single day, swear by it.

tnmm-thanks for the recommendation-I think our local health shop stocks freederm products.

[henvy] @ your oz move

Stanton- I used to exfoliate every day too and swore by it but actually my skin is better since I stopped, it's just about getting the right combination of products I think. The more you scrub oily skin the more sebum it produces or something like that...

You can get Freederm in superdrug or boots.

lol, the oz thing is still a maybe but dh has an interview on wed and it is looking hopeful!!

Can anyone recommend products with spf in ? I find that matte moisturisers etc do not tend to have any sun protection in.....

my skin was v. greasy in my twenties and I sued a product called Ketsugo oil control gel which really did work at reducing oil levels to normal amounts. You can still buy it on line

I have oily skin with acne scars, open pores, redness, blackheads and angry red lumps on my skin, with dry patches on my cheeks. I sound like something from a horror film now. But, I have tried so many different things. I did use the ketsugo oil control gel for a while, but can't say I noticed a huge difference. Things I've found to be good are my Clarins cleanser and toner for combination skin, no itching, no irritation, not too oily or too dry.

Also, I have a clinique pore minimising primer thing which is incredible. It makes my skin matt and kind of covers it all up. Gets rid of shine, redness and open pores.

Any 'simple'/clean and clear etc products which I've used, I've found to actually make my skin really dry. So the oil problem is still there, but there's also this awful tight feeling which makes me feel like my face might crack everytime I smile.

A great moisturiser is Biotherm non stop aquasource moisturiser. The only downside is it doesn't have any sunscreen in it. It feels quite wet and greasy when you put it on, but within a minute has sunk in, with no shine. Almost every other moisturiser I've used has caused shine which then accentuates my redness and open pores. And I only ever buy oil free ones! In fact, I can't afford the biotherm one at the moment, so I went and bought a much cheaper one from tesco, thinking that maybe my skin would just be normal and be able to handle it. It's an olay oil free daily uv fluid and it's bloody awful. I put it on, my skin felt wet and now it's just shiny and greasy. I've only had it on for a few hours and my face looks red and blotchy. When I use things that make my face greasy, it somehow affects my whole face and makes it red and itchy when then makes my lips look very red (even though I don't put it on my lips) and they start to peel for the next few days.

Every 4 days or so, I use a philosophy microdermabrasion peel. It's basically an exfoliation. You put the exfoliating stuff on first, then a gel on afterwards which warms up. When I was it off, my face looks radiant and feels smooth.

It's an absolute nightmare. I've found this website to be a godsend. I think I go on about it quite a lot on this site, but there are thousands of reviews on there, and they include information such as age and skin type, so you can get an idea of what others with a similar skin type to your own think of it.

Sorry for the huge message, I've just been thinking about this myself this morning. By the way, I buy most of these things from discount make-up/skincare websites or trusted sellers on ebay. I could never afford to buy all of those things at full price, so don't immediately buy them all at full price.

Thanks stars,I think we have pretty similar skin actually. The open pores and ever increasing redness is really starting to get me down.
I get these awful blind type boils-they never break the skin and just appear and then disappear after a few weeks of trying to cover them up.I get really fed up with teenage skin at 34.

Will look at your link.

JustAnother, have you tried the Alpha Hydrox range? It seems similar to your last link (although I'm no skincare expert so could be wrong). I used it and was quite impressed. Can't remember why I stppped using it now!

It's also fairly cheap and very well reviewed. I think it's an American product, but can be bought fairly cheaply online.

JustAnother · 31/10/2010 18:37

starsareshining, yes, I have tried that one. I bought it from Amazon for about £20, if I remember properly. I think it is good, but I can only use it once per day. The recommended "twice a day" is too much for me, as my skin is more combination than oily. I can see the difference as my skin looks much brighter after about 3 weeks of using it.

I cleanse/ remove make up with a foaming cleanser by aveda which you just rinse with water. It leaves skin oil free but not dry or stripped feeling. I very rarely moisturise my skin, and just splash my face with cold water in the morning.
For make up I use Benefit Dr Feelgood balm on my skin to keep it Matt feeling after I put on foundation- Now using benefit You Rebel.

Since starting with these I no longer feel greasy, and I don't find that my make up slides off my face throughout the day.

I bought some of this today whilst out shopping today,I really don't buy cheap stuff but thought hmm,I'll give it a go.

Oddly enough I remembered something about Salicylic acid and it helping to clearing up bad skin and checking on the back,it contains 2% salicylic.

I have a bad habit of spending alot of money on beauty products so stop linking SpaceNK Wink

I cannot wear Dr feelgood,it really makes my skin break out and feel sore but I wear You Rebel in the summer months when my skin is normally nice and clear. My dh bought me some kind-a gorgeous foundation and I simply cannot wear it,bless him.

I love Benefit but some of it doesn't love me.

That link just sent me to the sainsburys page. The Alpha Hydrox range product I was talking about was this. I can't believe you paid twenty pounds! Was that for more than one product? I didn't pay very much at all for that and was very impressed with it. Although, I do think that it'd be advisable to wear a sunscreen if you're using a product like that.

I've recently started using Clinique anti-blemish foundation, and am quite pleased with it. Foundation usually makes me break out, but this doesn't seem to, and is nice and matte and stops the greasiness. It does contain a bit of salicylic acid. Good coverage too, which I fairly need.

I like Ren jojoba exfoliator, it seems to clean really well without making my skin sore
