What do you do about setting up a savings account for a child who can't read or write?

I don't mean a "long term for his future" sort of account, but a typical kids account where they can put pocket money in to save for bigger things, and make withdrawals (and hopefully learn a bit about handling money). Some interst would be nice but is not the main object here really. Obviously at this stage, there would always be mum and dad there to help him, but how do we go about withdrawals when he can't sign a slip.

Does any one have any recommendations about a good account to get? (maybe one where an adult can be an agent or something?)

DS1 has got a 'pocket money' account at Santander. DH just takes the book down when we want to get out money on DS's behalf and they give it to him. DS would not be able to manage any aspect of the transactions, but they let us get out the money. I presume you would be able to help your DC out at the counter.

Thank you. Yes, he can't go out on his own anyway so we would be there to help (or to do it in his absence).

He has been pestering me since I mentioned it! I think we might try our local building society and see what they say; I think they do card only accounts so the account holder just gets an atm card, which might be easier; but he can read numbers and I can remember how much I loved seeing the balance go up in my pass book!!
