Going into hospital tomorrow

Hello,

The hospital rang me this afternoon, and DS is going into hospital for his tests, scans and examinations tomorrow.

They told me for 3 or 4 days....

I am so scared for him.

At least I can stay on the ward (he is very young and is still bf), but he has been in hospital before (for something unrelated when he was 10 days old).

It seems he's had a such a tough start to his short life (he's only 3.5 months old).

I so wish I could take his place...

Hi, well we went to hospital on Thursday for DS's examninations.

DH and I were worried about him being in for so long, so we rang the ward Wednesday night and spoke to the consultant who told us it would be very unusual to admit someone on a Thursday for so long...

So I took him to the ward for 7.30 and he saw a great opthalmologist who confirmed he does have a visual impairment, but he is seeing light and his eyes look normal, so they can't say exactly what is wrong at this stage. So he's been referred to Moorfields for more scans etc when he's a few months older. At this stage they think he may have Delayed Visual Maturity.

The neurologist also saw him and from the examination said he is normal and doing what a baby his age should be doing. He has to back for an MRI scan in a couple of months.

They let us out at lunch time..

So all in all we felt it went well. Hopefully DSs vision will improve with time..

Thanks for your good wishes...

That sounds promising! Hope it all keeps going well. Have you been given advice on how to stimulate his vision to help it to develop as well as possible?

I'm glad you managed to leave so much faster than you'd expected.

Yes, the drs told us to put bright objects in front of him, and they said the TV would be good too. Not so sure about that though....a dr also said to "make life as easy as possible for him" by putting large objects in front of him too.

For DS1 we had the black and white cards which DS2 seems to like as well. Also he seems to enjoy books too so we are making sure he joins in sometimes with DS1 (but it's hard because it almost seems like the stories-before-bed is our "special" time with DS1).

I am thinking about getting some Baby Einstein videos for DS2. I don't want him in front of the TV all day but thought it might be a bit different for him.
