Fillings?

Ds is having a GA for some dental work on weds. I'm pretty sure that as they are milk teeth any rotten ones will just be taken out, but just in case I've told the hospital that I don't want him having any silver fillings but will pay for white ones (hoping they aren't too expensive!). I'm worried about mercury you see. However the nurse who did his pre-op check yesterday rang me at home to say that she has asked and there is no mercury in the fillings nowadays but I can have white if I want as long as I pay for them. I can discuss it all with the dentist before the op on weds.
I'm not sure what's best now. It seems silly to pay for white fillings for milk teeth if the silver ones are harmless anyway. Does anyone know if there are any other harmful ingredients I should know about? And come to think of it, when did they stop using mercury?

I'm probably worrying over nothing as ds most likely won't even need fillings but it would be nice to be armed with a little info. TIA.

Don't know about the mercury in fillings, but wanted to ask how old DS is and why he is having GA for dental work. The reason I ask is because I have wondered how DD who's 6 would ever have dental work if she needed it, coz she wouldn't open her mouth or keep it open. So just been thinking maybe she would need a GA.

Hi ds is rising 7. He's never let anyone have a proper look at his teeth and though I do my best to clean them every day it's a bit hit and miss. From brief glimpses we've noticed some of his teeth at the back seem brown. I had to take him to the dentist a while ago because he was obviously in pain and she said he was teething. It hadn't occured to me because dd is almost 11 and still has most of her milk teeth! Anyway the dentist was concerned that the decay would start to trouble him and recommended getting him on the waiting list as it was 6 months long. Now he's at the top of the list we weren't sure whether to cancel the appt as he seems ok now the back molars have come through. However on the basis that if we cancel he will certainly develop raging toothache within the hour we've decided to go ahead and get him looked at properly. I'm totally dreading it though.

He has got better just recently at letting me clean his teeth (although even the dentist admitted he has a very large tongue that makes it more difficult) but unfortunately the damage has been done.
