Getting Mobility DLA - any tips??

DD was 5 yesterday and I've had the dreaded DLA forms to apply for mobility, we do already get middle rate care, and seems now she may qualify for the mobility.

DD is 'mobile', but still has the gait and unsteadiness of a toddler, she struggles climbing so I have to put her into her car seat and get her out otherwise she undoubtably would fall out!! I certainly couldn't take her shopping and expect her to walk. She is also cognitively delayed and has absolutely no concept of road safety, stranger awareness etc. Overall she is probably about 18-24 months developmentally.

I do know that how I word the form is critical in how successful we are with the claim, has anyone got any tips that could help??

Thank you!!!!!!

there is high rate or low rate mobility.
the low rate is what i recieve for DS. It is for those who although they CAN walk they ned a lot of extra assistance whilst out.

For the high rate you need to show that DD can't walk for more than a certain distance (i think its about 50 metres...but i may be worng)

I hope this helps, this is what i was told when i was completing the forms earlier this year.

Hi Dellie my ds is 3 and has autism, i already receive high rate care for him and after reading various things on the net realised i should put in for mobility for him. Anyway i got the form and filled it out and sent it at the beginning of December. I phoned today because i havent heard anything and the girl said they hadnt received it so i had to get her to send another one out. I know theres a guide to help you i think the site is Bhas but hopefully someone else will come along with the proper adress or link to it. I hope it turns out ok and you get entitlement to mobility for your dd.

Hi Delllie

We get low rate DLA Mobility for DD.

I would suggest going to the citizens advise bureau. They have books that explain to the adviseor how to word the form for you. Find out what time they open and get their first as you may have to wait but it is worth it.

Also compare your child to other children of their age classmate sibling etc. e.g. My son who is 4 can walk ... but DD can only walk... without stopping etc.

Hope this helps and good luck. I think sometimes it just depends on who is reading the form!

Oh and photocopy the form before you post it.

Not only will it make completing the next round of forms a lot easier but it means that if they lose your form you can complete it all again quickly just by copying the original.

I get high rate care but no mobility, I was advised to appeal but didn't- and regret it muchly (is that a word? LOL)

CEREBRA webiste has a guide that comes highly recommended on it, I would definitely find the time to give it a read (I didn't- heed my lesson ).

Try using the BHAS guide here

DS gets middle rate for the care component and I used the BHAS guide when filling out the form. I wouldn't have thought to put even 1/2 the things down that I did if i hadn't read the guide and followed the advice and I'm sure ds wouldn't have got dla.

We got our DLA for mobility at 3. dd can't even sit, let alone walk so there was no problem. I guess cut and dried is easy but in other cases its up to some clerk who has never had a child with special needs.

we have had high rate care for dd for over a year now and as she,s almost 3 we were sent the forms for mobility.

I sent off for the Cerebra guide to DLA and it is really good, we have just been awarded high rate mobility for her starting in April.

The Cerebra guide tells you how to word your sentences and is really really helpful.
