DS psychologist not happy about seeking 2nd opinion

She told DH today that "even if DS does get dx with ASD it wont change anything as the "specialist" who carried out the ADOS will view this as a challenge on her authority/opinion and wont be happy at all"

DH said that DS is not getting the help he needs/deserves and that we believe that he was turned down for a statement on Monday as he has no dx.

Yesterday we were told unofficially by someone who works closely with the SEN dept at our council that our council are notorious for turning down assessments with no dx and that the employees get really frustrated with it.

Psych said "its only a label, he will get the help he needs without it"
Well if its only a label why not give it to him?

She said that at the end of the day you are paying someone to dx your son and that is what they will do.the NHS wont take any notice of it,
she admitted again that DS presents with many of the autistic features but that because he showed imagination and talks to adults? that he cant possibly be ASD. GRRRRR Angry

I have decided not to attend any more "helping" sessions as she makes me annoyed, we are supposed to be attending a parenting course in April specially for me and DH - whoopie doo i cant wait.

Oh and her parting shot "Tell Jen not to take it personally that DS doesnt have a dx, its only a label at the end of the day"

yes i agree with you Socci, unfortunately this CAMHS dept have been that from the start-unprofessional.

i emailed the specialist who is coming to see us in 2 weeks and told him what had been said and he said that he sees this all the time, there are too many "experts on ASD" without expertise relying on narrow and old information and as a result children are not being dx,d properly, he said that he had never had his decisions called into question and that part of his job is training these so called "experts" up and down the country, he said if all he did was dx people because he was paid to do it then what would be the point and that he had actually lost lucrative clients by having an independent mind.

Consultant said to DH "dont get your hopes up with this private psych, ive seen this many a time and parents end up getting upset when things go wrong"

jenk1,

Who on earth is this woman spouting such garbage?.
She is actually doing a lot of harm.

"She told DH today that "even if DS does get dx with ASD it wont change anything as the "specialist" who carried out the ADOS will view this as a challenge on her authority/opinion and wont be happy at all"

To which I would have replied, "Aaaah diddums!".

"DH said that DS is not getting the help he needs/deserves and that we believe that he was turned down for a statement on Monday as he has no dx"

Your DH is right on both counts.

"Yesterday we were told unofficially by someone who works closely with the SEN dept at our council that our council are notorious for turning down assessments with no dx and that the employees get really frustrated with it".

Can well believe it.

"Psych said "its only a label, he will get the help he needs without it"

I would have had to restrain myself from really giving her both barrels verbally at this particular juncture!.

I have read many mixed reports regarding CAMHS; to my mind they are about as much use as a chocolate teapot with regards to ASD. Purely from reading their website this is not their main area at all.

And a parenting course is somehow going to magic all the difficulties away?. What planet are they on exactly?!.

I wish you the very best of luck with this specialist you now have on board. You need someone professional to work with you, certainly not against you at every turn.

Just adds to my opinion that CAHMS and psychiatrists are not the right people to understand, assess or dx developmental disabilities.....
