Feeling very lost at the moment and need some help? Have daughter in yr 6 who has continually struggled with her schooling. We removed her from the last school at the end of year 4 and is now at a MS Indep school. We saw an Occ. Ther about a year ago, but all the issues she had then with motor skills seem to have improved. She saw an Ed Psyc about two years ago, where she scored very low but impression that she would improve. We have had a succession of labels, each one then being discounted (Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Neuro Developmental Delay, etc) To cut a long story short, the school has said they don't think that they can accommodate her needs when she moves up to year 7. They now think that she has discalcula. The options are we move her (to where??), she stays behind a year, or we try to get her statemented (which they have said will be extremely difficult because it is subject specific).
I don't know where to begin or where to go to. My daughter is a very immature and sensitive soul and has finally started to settle and feel good about herself. She just cannot seem to make any progress with maths (have tried Kumon - don't ask! now goes to see a Maths tutor weekly) I don't know what to do?

Have you tried the charities? Dyslexia Action give good advice and support (including on dyscalcula which is so much more common than people realise). Also Contact A Family who give good advice on statements.

There will be a good school for her - either a mainstream school with good support or a special school used to supporting children with her needs. National Association of Non Maintained Special Schools may also be able to help.

Has she had her language skills assessed? What is her non verbal IQ v her verbal IQ?
