Slings and backpacks

trying to choose a SSC but completely baffled by choice!

DS is now 6mo & about 17lbs - we've been using a babasling since birth & more recently a kari-me which i love, but i think he's starting to get too big for it (he fell asleep in it yesterday & after an hour my shoulders were seriously achey) - just wish i'd got to grips with it sooner!

anyway i think a SSC is the way to go now he's getting heavier, & now my SPD is slowly getting better i'd really like to carry him more. i'm completely bewildered by the choice though! i know i need to try them out first really, but the next local sling meet is a few weeks away so i was hoping that if i posted my requirements here that more experienced babywearers could recommend a particular brand to look out for 2nd hand (or even brands to avoid would be helpful too).

ok, so:

  • needs to be easily adjustable so that DP can use it too - i am 5'4" & large build, he is 6'1" & slim-medium build
  • not too bothered about pretty designs given that DP will be using it too - plain black is fine!
  • i've had neck & back problems in the past, so it needs to be supportive & distribute the weight well
  • don't mind shelling out £s on something that will get lots of use

also, does anyone know of any shops in london where i could try out some slings? preferably north or central, but will travel if anyone's got a good recommendation.

    thanks

I think the Manduca fits your requirements. A friend of mine has one and i tried it out. It really is the Rolls Royce of Soft Structured Carriers. I have used an Ergo and a Connecta as well. The Ergo is deffo not good as the Manduca. the Connecta has a lot of Fabric designs and if you wanted a pretty one, it would be the one out of these three, IMO.

www.bigmamaslings.co.uk sells the Manduca, I think.

that's interesting, a woman i met at the last sling meet recommended the manduca as well, but she didn't have hers with her for me to try out.

might hire one for a couple of weeks & see how we get on with it before i buy one.

thanks foxy
