Slings and backpacks

Come and suggest some carriers for a walking holiday!

We're going to the Lake District in September and hope to do a fair bit of walking, if we can get some carriers that will work for us!

DD will be 2.3 and weighs about 12.5kg. I gave up using a connecta with her at about 18mo as it was hurting my shoulders and I haven't carried her since. DS will be 4mo. I used a karime stretchy wrap for sleeping and sanity when he was a newborn, but haven't used it recently - he's more nosey than DD was at that age at gets annoyed in it if he's not asleep as wants to be looking around!

We also need to carry our lunches, a map, some water etc, plus the usual changing paraphernalia.

Would one of those big rucksack things with a frame be the best thing for the toddler? The only thing is, that will probably take up a lot of room in our car, which we don't have! What would be the best thing to do for the baby? Go back to using the Karime? And if so, in what position? He's getting quite heavy and I think it might be uncomfortable to have him for a long time on the front, but I think he's too young for a back carrier?

I have a mei tai and a Beco Butterfly that I have tried with DD in the past, but didn't get on with them at the time, although maybe it would be worth trying again now.

Any suggestions welcome, although DH will probably kill me if I buy another sling!!

I'm not expert (yet), but how about just a straight forward woven wrap. You'd have to learn how to use it/wrap your little one, but there are done excellent tutorials on YouTube (the double hammock is a good one I find).
It wouldn't take up any space really and you could then still put your map etc in your walking jacket or small messenger bag.

I would recommend a Mei Tai. I carried my son in one until he was 3 1/2. You can easily fold it up and stuff it in your bag until you need it. It is comfortable to wear and your boy can sleep in it, too.

Def a toddler sized mei tai, for an older toddler I like one with a buckle waist belt, but long straps so you can twist them for extra support.

All stuff goes in other adults rucksack who is carrying the baby on the front. Again, I like a meitai.

We did have a framed carrier, but neither of us liked the weight distribution

Have a look at bushbaby we've had the baby carrier and one of the frame rucksacks and they've been brilliant. Grin
