Backpack newbie looking for help

I'm looking to buy a backpack for DC3 so that we can take the kids out on the beach and on walks where a buggy wouldn't really cope with the terrain. I'm slightly smaller than average and short waisted. DC3 is 12 months. When I tried a backpack with DC1 I felt that it was designed for people taller than me. The waist bit felt like it was sitting at my bum and the whole thing felt like it needed lifted up several inches but I had the straps on the tightest setting and couldn't lift it any higher. Any ideas for a backpack that would suit a smaller than average mum?

I would look for a soft structured carrier rather than backpack style. Backpack style ones seem primarily designed for Dads - so with longer torsos than you and I (I am short waisted and size 10 and find the same).

Something like the Ergo or Manduca or Boba or similar.....are you near a sling library or sling meet where you could go and try them out? Different brands suit different people and there are lots of choices.

I know what you mean, we've got a Chicco framed carrier that dh used for dd1, I found it much too awkward. I've just bought a Patapum carrier for 6mo dd2 off a lovely mumsnetter Smile. It's similar to an Ergo but a bit cheaper. It's really comfy on my front or back - I've mainly used it on my front though as I'm too scared to try putting her on my back by myself Blush, even though I found instructions online. Google Little Possums - there are a few soft carriers on there to choose from.

AmandinePoulain - this technique for getting them on your back is good if you're nervous. You just need to juggle your hands right so that it's easy to get that first elbow through
