Least hideous artificial sweetener?

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 31/05/2015 16:53

I usually avoid artificial sweetener like the plague as I don't like the taste and consider them unhealthy but I'm really trying to give SW a proper go so fancy trying some of the low syn cakes or puddings on their websites as I am frustrated by the high syn count of even the tiniest slither of real cake.

But mostly the recipes use artificial sweetener, which I've never bought. Which brands taste the least 'artificial' and are there any that are good or bad for cake?

I use Splenda...it still tastes like sweetener, but I can tolerate it.

I've never cooked with sweetener but watching with interest.
If you're needing for tea/coffee avoid the aldi stevia ones like the plague, simply awful. Doesn't even sweeten, just makes your cuppy taste chemically.

I loathe them all and hate myself for even thinking of using them. The half and half brown sugar blend/ stevia ( whit worths?) doesn't taste so chemically- of course it isn't syn free but personally it feels like a compromise I can do. Hate the fat free stuff too- it does make SW quite hard to follow!! Hey ho- onwards and upwards!! - or hopefully downwards.

I bought Splenda too to try in a cake recipe. It wasn't worth it because of the very bitter after taste. It spoiled the moment!

Now I eat M+S jaffa cakes instead.

Monk fruit, stevia and chicory are all natural sweeteners, not artificial. So better than chemical ones for you and generally considered to be ok for you unlike agave.

Thanks for the suggestions. It would be for a cake or pudding only as I don't have sweetened tea or coffee.

I think the best one was buy jaffa cakes Grin. I like those and 3 or 4 is a decent portion and within a sensible syns limit. It's not even a disaster if I eat the whole box if I am careful within the next few days.

Since my first post I have found this recipe on the Slimming World website. It is a fat free sponge with cinnamon and apples in, no artificial sweetener and only 5 syns for a proper sized slice of cake! I made one last night and while it isn't the most luxurious cake in the world, it is quite nice and doesn't use artificial sweeteners.

I think the worst recipe I found was for brownies that used 150 grammes of artificial sweetener Shock. That is two big jars, however, a few of the people who commented on the recipe said you could use a lot less.

However, I don't want to spend a load on sweetener and other ingredients to make a cake that doesn't taste nice.

Still on the fence about buying some - I'll see what I see on offer and will stock up on the jaffa cakes.

I've made the brownies...I'm probably one of the comments, lol.

I use 30g of sweetener in them...and stick raspberries on top.

They're not the most amazing cakes I've ever had, no, but they're totally edible and handy for a chocolate cake fix if you're low on syns.

It's mostly eggs, so not hugely expensive to make either.

The weetabix cake is good btw, it's a fruit loaf rather than a cake cake, but that is genuinely nice rather than good enough.
