Cotbed - taking the sides down

We're planning on taking the sides down on our DS's cotbed this weekend, making it into a 'big boy's' bed. However we're not sure whether to let him watch or just make the switch when he's not there. What did you do?

My gut feeling is to allow him to take part in the process, helping to make the bed and put on a new duvet, pillow etc? He doesn't like too many changes at once so we'd like to tread carefully.

Thanks!

I'd let him take part in it. talk to him loads about the reasons - he's a big boy now.

Thanks, MrsBish. You're right.

Once I posted the question, I realised that I already knew the answer!

Feeling a bit apprehensive about having him loose at night though, rather than contained by the bars!

ds1 - did it when he was there.
ds2 - did it when he was staying the night at his dad's, although had told him I was going to do it as he climbed out of the cot 4 times the night before.
Both were fine with it.
