im pregnant, due in july, but my 14 month old is not sleeping without me as my waist length hair is his security blanket.
he has a matress on the floor and i go in with him till hes settled back down, but when the new babe comes i want to co sleep with it without my ds feeling regected so want him to get used to it now.
and i dont do crying to sleep by the way. but at his lunchtime nap today he only did 25mins, he'll sleep ages if im there.

you could try introducing a different security blanket (or a teddy or whatever) -
keep it in bed with both of you for the moment, then after a while try with the blanket but without you, iyswim.

Have you seen the No-Cry Sleep Solution? It's not magic but has some good ideas and might make you feel more positive about the whole thing (did for me )

I knew someone whose toddler used her hair as a security blanket/sleep aid.

They managed to persuade him to use a doll with long quite realistic hair instead. I think he took a bit of persuading but they did it in the end (although he was older than your DS)

Good luck

My DS has a cat, that is pretty manky now, and i made sure to buy 2 and keep alternating them so they are both equally manky as each other so he cant tell the difference! You never know if they might get lost tommorrow and then hell will break loose. Also he has a taggie blanket that just stays in the bed and doesn't leave the bedroom, he loves to suck on the ribbons.

how about sit beside the cot and lean against it; he can still sroke your hair, then to the slow retreat method out of the room

What about (drastic) a long hank of human hair, washed and dried, attached to a teddy or something?

YOu can buy human hair.
