hello

i have a son who is almost 1 and wakes 2 or 3 times a night. i need some advice on how i can get him to sleep through as i feel so tired. i have been breastfeeding him and want to wean him on to cows milk soon as well. I feed him in his room and then put him in his cot. He sometimes wakes about 1 hour after being put down. last night was 11 , 2 and 5, i feed him then put him back in his bed.

i think part of the problem is that he suffers from eczema and really really scratches his head in particular when tired and at night. i think this wakes him up. he gets so upset by it and have been to doctors and have bath oil, shampoo which stinks and creams etc. have asked to be referred to hospital dermatology unit as want to have blood test done to see if he is allergic to certain foods.

any advice would be appreciated. thank you

Hi foxy, sorry I don't have any real answers, but just sympathy and big hugs. My DS is 10mo and the same, still waking a few times for a feed, he's still in our room, the only way I cope is by him co-sleeping most of the night now, but he does like to stretch out and make himself very comfortable at our expense usually! He's also been BF and I wasn't going to wean until he stopped the night feeds, but he shows no sign of stopping them and I've had to start giving formula at night now (bit me badly a couple of months ago and still not healed properly, so I can't take the one-sided feeding and expressing off the other faff anymore on top of the constant wakings!)

Hopefully this will bump for you and somebody with more experience than me will be able to suggest some things with both the excema and night wakings.

foxy how many snooozes in the day does he have? or is he just having one around 12/1 pm for about 1 1/2hr, which is ideal for a good solid night imo. i feed my son til 13mths but dropped night feeds . in my book, after 8pm from 8 1/2mths, maybe 3 nights he woke looking but he got zilch.

why arent u using any creams for his eczema? maybe u dont want to use any prescribtions but if its infantile maybe he ll grow out of it and the creams would settle him at night too....

cows milk is pretty high up there for allergy sufferers so u may want to think twice about weaning him to it.
after i feed my ds he wasnt interested in milk and i gave him water and cooked his food with the necessary dairy requirement.
neither of mine are milk drinkers.

thanks everyone. he has anything from 30 mins to 1 hour 30 mins lunch time. i do put cream on his face and body and use a specialist shampoo for cradle cap but he still scratches his scalp , chin, ears and face. i also have a antihistamine? which i give him but does not help. Really want to help him so he sleeps more comfortably and i feel like a zombie. maybe i should end in husband at night (but i feel guilty as i am asahm and he has a very stressful job).
