Sleep

Do you hear your baby when he/she wakes at night?

I didn't know it was possible to switch off to the extent that you can sleep through your baby crying.

I wake the instant any one of my 3 start crying and go straight into them - it seems as if I am on call 24/7 in a very light and non-restful sleep. DH on the other hand doesn't hear a thing. I have had nights where DD was crying for a feed, DS1 puked everywhere and the DS2 pulled his nappy off and pooed everywhere, DH didn't even stir.

I am insanely envious of the ability to totally switch off. Can you? If you can, what's your secret?

I used to hear my DD instantly when she was a young baby. She cried a lot then. she's nearly 2 now and I think my brain has adjusted to which is a serious cry and a 'just whinging'

I have been known to sleep through it quite often

Nope, i wake up the minute DS starts too. I do tend to lie there for a moment listening to him is it's just a little grizzle as he does sometimes go back to sleep on his own.

Dh usually wakes up a few moments after me, and will go to him if I'm at work the next day and he's off.

The only time I didn't wake immediately was after a few drinks one night. Dh was still up so he sorted him out, and I vaguely remember hearing him go in to him, but I wasn't as sharp as normal

Ds is now 2.3 and dh freely admits that as he knows I will hear and get up if ds wakes (very rarely these days unless he is ill)then he can relax into a deep sleep safe in the knowledge that I will wake him up if needed!

Ah, so sleeping through is the exception rather than the norm.

I am getting to the point - 7 years down the line, that I'd give my left arm for a solid, deep kip.
