got dd (20 months) a toddler yesterday

she started out fine very excited and curious i put it in the same spot in the bedroom where her cot was and moved the cot out of the room

it is just a bit bigger than her cot and is against the wall with a bed guard a the side

she started off ok kept getting up but when she got tired didn;t want to go anywhere near it, got hysterical it got to 11.30pm and i went to sit with her to try and calm her down she clamed down but flipped put again when i tried to lay her down, i stayed for half an hour bt she wouldn't settle, dh went up and she was dropping off sat up so he laid her down and held her there and she dropped off!

she woke at four hysterical again and afetr two hours went to sleep on dh's knee on the sofa

now she is fast asleep in her cot went stright down as usual

what oh what shall i do don;t want to scare her with the bed but she can climb out of the cot and does (don;t want her to brake her neck) ...

HI, I'm about to move overseas in August so am putting this off, but getting advice on what to do. The most popular advice was to keep the cot in the room at first so there's still a choice - not so scary. Also (although you've already bought the bed and linens etc) is to let them come shopping for these items to get excited about.

We went to Argos and spent a fortune on 'character' bedding (which I regret doing now because DD took to the bed without much fuss). Her favourite programme of all time is Balamory so that was the first set on. From then on its been called her Balamory bed and she happily goes. However, when she is in one of those "I'm not going to bed" moods, I tempt her with the Balamory covers and she goes no problem.

Hope that helps!

i think its something youre going to have to percevere with unfortunatly, she knows what happens when she crys to get up so its similar to anything else, she needs to learn this is her new big girls bed..can you afford some new covers, new teddy to take or something something to entice her

Just to add, we also took her to the shops/showed her the argos book and asked her to pick what she wanted. It was more 'hers' that way.

Good idea, Lazylou, with all this rain, my voice is hoarse today from singing flippin' Balamory...

Can't you keep her in the cot with the side down until she wasnts to go in a big bed?

With DS the bed, as well as the cot, has always been in his room so he was familiar with it.

Could you put the bed in her room whilst she still sleeps in the cot?

You could then lie on the bed together before her bedtime reading stories, having a chat and a cuddle so she associates with nice, happy but calm things.

That's a lovely idea BS. Trouble in this house though is the lack of space but I think that would have been a really nice thing to try had DD kicked up too much of a fuss!

I did exactly the same as you Betty and it worked a dream (thank goodness as I needed the cot for ds), dd now loves her big bed in her new bedroom. Tried to make it as exciting a transition as we could lots of positive comments etc. etc.

Good luck tinkerbellie

Sorry I can't help, Put ds into a proper sized single bed with a bed guard last sunday, in a new room too, not had one problem, the transission has been perfect, he goes straight to sleep, doesn't get out, and in the morning he chatters to himself until I go into him.

Sorry to sound smug but I am amazed it has been so simple.

I think the advice you have been given is good, you just need to persevere, hopefully after a couple more nights it will be more familiar for her.

have putthe bed in the roo with the cot and gone back to the cot for a week or so

might try again in two weeks when she is used to seeing the bed, do you think that i could take the cot to pieces in front of her so she knows it;s gone or leave it as a choice in the room for her

Tinkerbellie, dh and I used to ask her when the cot and bed were in her new room which she wanted to sleep in. She started off with the cot but everynight we read stories for her in the bed then moved her to the cot to sleep. Then one night she asked to stay in the bed, sorry can't remember exactly how long-def not longer than 2 wks tho. Good luck!!

Sorry I forgot to add that my dh then took the cot apart with her "helping", and put it back into the nursery ready for ds.

Can you take one side off the cot so she can get out without running the risk of hurting herself?

Report
tinkerbellie · 18/06/2007 21:24

i tried lowering one side as it;s a drop sided cot but she freaked out about that too - but if she climbed out when the side was down she wouldn;t hurt herself as she wouldn;t have to climb as high to get over the bar

thought about removing the side completely but the base is so high she would get quite a shock if she fell
