i'm just curious, because around here there seem to be los out far too late, eg 5 year olds still out at 9. am i odd in thinking they should be in bed at that time, even if they're reading?

Dd (2) goes to bed between 7.30 and 8. My nephew, who's 5, goes about 8pm.

DD (5) has a 7:30pm bedtime on a school night. She has a nightlight on and can read to herself after that. She falls asleep when ready, but normally that is pretty quickly during the week.

Weekends can be much later depending on where we are and what we are doing. However we are lucky in that if DD goes to bed later, she gets up later - she tends to sleep for 11/12 hours regardkess of when ut to bed. So later bedtimes at wekends can actually be a huge blessing for me and DH if we fancy a lie in

DD1 (5.5yrs) and DD2 (18months) go to bed at 7. Tea at 5, bit of a play, a bath / wash down at 6 ish, then milk, wind down and into bed at 7. I don't let them go past 8pm.

I'm semi strict about it if we aren't out and about. They go to sleep pretty bloody quickly at 7pm and wake up about 6.30 / 7am so they obviously need that much sleep.

kid's do vary, but i still think a 5 year old should be tucked up by 9, not out in the street.
btw, my ds is only 10 mo, so i may change my tune in the future!

Ah, but on a weekend if DD goes to bed at 9pm, then she won't be awake until 8:30-9am the next morning. Bliss!

DS2(6) 7.30 - 8.OO and about same time weekends as he always wakes early. DS1(9)
9ish. Later at weekends. He's quite difficult to get in bed, has developed effective avoidance strategies!

Oh when we are on holiday it will be generally when we go to bed, or not much earlier.

unfortunately my DS wakes up at the same time regardless of when he went to bed so later nights at the weekend just make for a tired irritable DS
Consequently DS (6) goes to bed about 7.30 every night and DD (2) usually goes up about the same time.
It's DS's birthday party this weekend (family and friends here for a bbq) so I think DS and DD will both go to bed fairly late saturday night. Fingers crossed that they do like all your children and lie in sunday morning. I wont hold my breath though.
