Does anyone have a child over the age of 4 that has a daytime nap???

This is following on from a thread I posted on Allergies about seeing a peadiatric specialist for my 5.5 year old. Turns out not to be asthma, but rather lung inflamation.

Anyway, he totally dismissed my description of my son's extreme exhaustion (and I mean so extreme that he will lay in the middle of the flor where ever we happen to be as he is so tired) as normal because in his opinion all children up to the age of about 10 need daytime naps.

I was so annoyed at this, but want to see if anyone else agrees with him. My son does 11-12 hours per night (admittedly somewhat broken by coughing which contributes to tiredess) and has not been having daytime lseeps since he was about 3.5.

I really don't know any other children above 4 who sleep in the day.

I have sent my son off now for a rest on his bed, but I doubt he will sleep. And if he does, I am dreading waking him up as he will be so moody and it will likely mean a later bedtime tonight.

Please tell me my doctor is not right!

I have three children, who were all good sleepers and slept through from 3 months, had 2 naps a day till aged 2 and then gave up the remaining 1 nap at age 3 - ish. They only time any of them sleep in the day now is if we've had a particularly full on day out they might drop off in the car. They are 7,5 &4

It's nonsense - see another doctor.

Some children do have afternoon naps till about 5 but minority I would have said.

My DS only sleeps during the day if particularly exhausted or ill.

my dd is four on monday and at this moment is in her bed, she can't get through the day without a nap, she goes to pre school nursery in the morning then has an hour after lunch (if she doesn't she's the devils child. She also sleeps 12 hours at night, i have mentioned this to health visitor she says just to enjoy the hour peace.

On the other hand ds 22 months is not that keen on sleeping during the day!
