Sleep

Has anyone had a baby like this?

I'm not really after advice as such, I just want to know if anyone else has had a baby like this?

Ds2 is 11.5 months. He's was never a naturally good sleeper, he'd never just passively fall asleep, he'd get overtired and stay awake for hours.

He is MUCH better now and I think, I hope we are through the worst. I mean he's got a bedtime routine, he has a long nap in the day when in his cot, and he sleeps through 50% of the time, the other nights he cosleeps half the night and sometimes we do get kept up. No night feeds now or anything so we are lucky compared to some.

But my gosh that boy can stay awake when he wants to. If we go out anywhere for the day he will not sleep in the pram, I can walk him round for miles and he will be tired but wide awake. He has to have a blanket draped over the pram for any hope of going to sleep and he might nod off briefly but it would take an hour of walking him in the pram.

He's such a light sleeper too, the slightest noise and he wakes up. We totally carry on as normal and don't tiptoe around but he never gets used to it. He wakes up every night when we go to bed.

Regarding the cosleeping people just say oh do cc or don't give in. Not ds, if he does wake up in the night he won't go back to sleep, he gets himself into too much of a state.

I miss the days with my ds1, I could just sit him in his bouncer and he'd nod off, he'd sleep anywhere, he'd sleep in in the mornings. He slept through the night and even if he did get up a quick cuddle and he'd go back to bed.

I'm used to ds2 now but I se all these babies sleeping in their buggies bad I feel a bit jealous.

My two were crap sleepers. If they weren't in bed having their bedtime routine adhered to like glue we were up for hours after with grumpy kids.

We didn't have babies who would fall asleep in a pushchair on a whim at family parties etc.

DS particularly hated sleep and preferred to co-sleep wearing a gro-bag with a boob in his face. Hmm

It's Swings and roundabouts.

I'm one of those mums with a baby who will sleep in her pushchair but she very very rarely sleeps in her cot during the day. If I'm lucky she'll fall asleep in her pushchair whilst in our home and I can rest/tidy but otherwise I have no choice but to walk miles in order to ensure she naps. Today, for example, I walked around our local park for 1.5 hours this morning, lunchtime I walked another 45 minutes (she only slept for 15 minutes) so has to go for another walk at 3.30 for another hour. It's exhausting especially as she doesn't sleep through the night.

Thanks, a lot of people don't get it. I didn't really get it as ds1 was so good.

Days out are tricky but I know he's almost one now so eventually naps won't be a big issue.

Sorry to hear that goldplated, I suppose I shouldn't be envious when I see babies snoozing in their prams then.

I am really happy with how he's sleeping now at home so I know I'm lucky that he will go in his cot.

My super light sleeper quite suddenly started sleeping more deeply at about 14 months.

The exact nature of his crap sleep was mostly different to yours (he would fall asleep in sling/buggy but wake up the instant we came through the door; woke every hour of every night). But he was an extremely light sleeper and a baby who actively tried not to sleep - like he didn't want to miss out on anything. Hmm

He started sleeping more deeply at 14 months, which was amazing because I got my evenings back. And he started actively embracing sleep times at some point before he turned two. He is now four and a wonderful sleeper - but I still feel weirdly retrospectively jealous of parents with conveniently-sleeping babies. Blush

Yup. DD won't sleep anywhere but in my arms and wakes up if I so much as breathe too loudly. It's really hard going!

ds was a great sleeper at night, but from about 10 months he wouldn't sleep anywhere except in his own bed. (We didn't have car at the time and when we did go in a car he would fall asleep in a car) but not in the pram, not at someone else's house, not out and about at all.
If we went anywhere, we had to accept he wouldn't sleep until we got home.

Yup. If a sparrow farts in the next county he's awake. He never had that 'sleepy newborn" phase - he was hauled out looking very pissed off, head held up perfectly, looking around as if to say 'right, what's all this then?'
Even as a tiny newborn he would stay awake all day unless we really tried to get him to sleep,
It's tough - you just have a very alert baby , the world is too interesting to sleep 😊

Yes DS won't sleep anywhere but his cot and in the car if in good traffic on the motorway Grin I'm very pleased we got him in his cot though as for the first 4 months he was a total cot refuser. I adored co-sleeping but at 4 months he started moving around and we moved to formula so were getting up in the night anyway, so one night we moved from co-sleeping to own room, own cot and it was ace.
Anyway sorry, I digress. We use an untuned analogue radio for white noise, which seems illogical given he's such a light sleeper, but it helps even out any noise we make downstairs and he sleeps really well.
He will go and go and go until we take him upstairs for a nap, he won't sleep anywhere else. But he takes really chunky naps and sleeps well at night so I'm happy :)
He was 1 last week and seems to be going longer before his morning nap so might be moving to one nap now - don't know if that will be better or worse!!

Zaurak and Bendy your babies sound just like ds. I like that if a sparrow farts in the next county he's awake! Ds was also born very alert, and getting him to sleep was a lot of effort back then. He could stay awake for the whole day. He'd sleep in the car but wake when the car stopped and I could lie with him on the bed only for him to sleep for 10 minutes.

He was also a cot refuser until around 5 months when we seemed to crack it and he accepted his cot, at least part of the night anyway. He's got lullabies on his monitor and I've found he will sleep with the music on and it does seem to drown out other sounds.

He's gone to one nap now of his own accord 11am-2.00pm (unless a noise wakes him) and nights have been much, much better since.

I've got photos of ds1 sleeping all sorts of places, even sitting in a playnest with some toys and just falling asleep.

Absolutely not complaining it just makes going out for the day tricky, as I know he won't sleep much if at all.

Wow goat, 11-2 is a long nap!! I could get on board with that routine, haven't eaten lunch in peace for months!
Yes Zaurak DS was the same, thinking about it! Could hold his head up straight away after birth. So alert. Aw, I just view it as enthusiasm for life! Grin
