Sleep

10 month 4:30am waking!

My 10 month old DS had recently started sleeping through the night. I was thrilled, as he'd been a terrible terrible sleeper for about 7 of those months!

This week, though, he's started waking at 4:30 or so, quite upset. He's obviously trying to get back to sleep but can't manage on his own. If I rock him back to sleep and put him down, he wakes so I've been rocking him back to sleep then bringing him back to my bed so I can at least squeeze in a little more sleep before we begin the day for real...

I know this wakeup isn't because he's done sleeping for the night as he's upset rather than his usual happy chatting. For every other bedtime/wakeup he happily puts himself to sleep with his dummy attached to a comforter toy.

What could be causing this weird time? He hasn't been fed in the night for over a month and doesn't need it when I rock him back to sleep. Could he be cold? The weather is starting to cool so perhaps he could need some more warmth in the early hours?

If you've experienced this I'd love your advice... Thanks!

Glad to hear I'm not alone...! Maybe there's something in the time of year and it'll blow over in a week or two?!

God I hope so, I'm due to go back to work in a couple of weeks I need sleep!

I was wondering if it could have something to do with naps? Ds still usually has 2 a day, but could be ready to drop one. That might effect the nights too?

Hmm... I'm not sure we're ready to drop a nap: he takes 2 very easily, in fact he's just settled himself to sleep without any fuss at all for his morning kip. He definitely seems tired and upset when he wakes in the early morning: he knows he needs more sleep but can't do it himself for some mystery reason...!

After 4 am is a really common time for small children to wake ( see all the desperate early waking threadsWink). It is the time when we move from deeper sleep into a lighter sleep phase, plus are coming to the end of a night sleep naturally. It is also unfortunately much more difficult to resettle small children back to sleep then.

Sorry I don't have any advice ( had an early walker for a long time!) but it is really common. It is also the coldest time of the night as well so guess that might be something worth checking, plus whether anything in the house turns on then noisily ( hot water etc) as again because it is a lighter phase of sleep little ones are more likely to be woken.

Hopefully for you it passes quickly Smile

Timtammy : I just have an early wanker ;-)

Grobag applied to the boy: let's see if being warmer helps...

Wake to sleep method. I've had the same problem with mine and have found it does work although unpleasant for you! Worth a go.
