Sleep

Awake times between sleep for 11 month old

How long are your (roughly) 11 month olds staying awake for between sleeps?

My 11 month old ds used to be awake for about 2.5 - 3 hours, then first nap, then awake about 3 hours, then second nap, then awake 3 - 4 hours before bed.

Over the last few days he's started waiting longer for his first nap, and then skipping his second nap completely. Today he was awake 6.5 hours from first nap until bed. This seems like a long time!

Is he in the process of moving from 2 naps to 1 do you think? Or should I be trying harder to fit in 2 naps? Yesterday we did 2 naps, but the second one was so late he then went to bed quite late, and then was up earlier than usual!

Maybe I should worry less and just go with the flow, which is what we do really, I just can't help wondering if any of this is contributing to his terrible night time sleep, and I'm also intrigued to know how long other similar age babies can stay awake for.

Thanks!

Hi

My 11.5 month old sometimes has two naps but its more like 1 nap for the past 10 days or so. First nap is usually 3-4 hours after he wakes up and he sleeps a couple of hours. Hope that helps"

Also I'm finding the afternoon awake time is a lot longer than it used to be. Around 5/6 hours.

Thanks that does help. I read that dropping to 1 nap happens around age 1-2 so this felt early, but probably seems about right. Though not if ds only naps for his standard 30 mins, that's too little sleep surely?! I'll just go with the flow, I'm sure he knows what he's doing! ;-)

My 11 month old had been in a pretty solid routine of:

6am wake up
9am nap
1pm nap
630pm bedtime

He usually has 1 hr in the morning and 1.5 in the afternoon. I wake him up from both of them. If i let him sleep as long as he wanted it really disrupts hips night sleep. If he sleeps longer than an hour in the morning it results in early morning starts!

So this was 3hr gap, 3hr gap, 4 hr gap. In the last few days however its been harder to get him down for 2nd nap and bedtime and has been more like 3hr, 3.5hr, 4.25hrs.

Im trying to hold onto 2 naps though as I hear that once they are walking they often need 2 still. I will see how we go.

Just to add that this routine only came about in the last 4 weeks when he started crawling. Before that he never slept more than 30 mins in the day or 2 hours at night! He is exhausted now he is on the move.

At 11 months we would do either;

11 am lunch
11.30 nap
6.30 bed

Or

4.30 - 5.30 nap
8.30 bed

He tended to wake up at 7.30 regardless

Sorry, just to add that at this age it's a bit easier to go by the clock as mealtimes regulate things a bit.

Have you tried going in at the half hour mark and resettling him to push him into the next sleep cycle?

Thanks moomin, interesting to hear your routine. We had 30 min naps until recently too, though now they range from 30 mins to sometimes an hour or two depending on nap method. I wonder what walking will bring!

And thanks not the op, we've never tried going by the clock, always just on his cues. Could be something to try to see if it works here!

Twinkle we've never tried going in to resettle as he never let's us leave in the first place! All naps are either lying by me, or out walking in sling, or occasionally pushchair or car!

Basil - I never really went by the clock, I loosely followed the 2-3-4 routine, but nottheop helped me about a month ago with a routine that followed the clock and its worked so well for us.

I can't get my son to sleep outside of the house!

So glad to see you're getting more sleep twinkle

I probably need to spend less time on the sleep board!

No please don't, your advice is really useful! Stay!

I wouldn't go that far. Ds slept quite badly on and off until 18 months, so it's just what worked for us. You're welcome to fire over any questions though

Thanks not, I might be back! On a 2 nap day today, not sure how late bedtime might end up being though! Shock

We're on one nap here which is usually about 2 hours from 10.30-12.30 or 11-1pm. Bedtime is between 7 and 7.30pm, so it can be as much as 7 hours between nap and bed. What I have noticed, is that if the nap is 1.5-2 hours it's fine, but if it is 1 hour or less it is a struggle. In that case we try to squeeze in another nap, but it does tend to make bedtime later.

We seem to be back to 2 naps now, with roughly 3 hours awake, nap, 4 hours awake, nap, then 4/4.5 hours awake then bed. I wonder when the 1 nap days will return....

We had 2 naps here yesterday! Bedtime got pushed to 8.30pm though which felt really late!

Glad to hear I’m not the only one ! My baby is almost 11 months.

Yesterday, however, I finally got baby to go into another sleep cycle and she slept almost 2 hrs instead of her usual 30 min!

I’m noticing she can now sleep 45/50 mins, and I will soon start to push awake time as much as possible to get her to take one long nap around mid day. She usually sleeps 11.5 hrs at night.

If that doesn’t work, second nap will probably push bedtime closer to 8, but soon I’m sure she’ll transition to 1 nap 🤞🏽
