Crib to cot transition nightmare!

My beautiful baby boy who went down awake and slept lovely (if not for full blocks) worked out how to stand, and has had to give up his beloved crib.

He HATES the cot. He has always liked to be closed in, and it is just too big and overwhelming for him.

Any suggestions - I was given a link to cot dividers but can't afford £24... am considering a piece of hardboard through the bars to make it a bit shorter - any other ideas before I go hardboard shopping tomorrow?

There are some cheap cot dividers on Ebay. Might be safer than hardboard. Cot bumpers might also help, although they are pricey - but if you are handy with a sewing machine they are surely a doddle to make.

My Doula taught me to roll up two sheets and place them either side of my newborn...basically a homemade version of the ones you see in the Blooming marvellous catalogue and if you use terry sheets they will be soft and familiar smelling. She also used to tuck on under his knees but he's a bit big for this now.

I don't know if you have a moses basket but my mum slept me in the cot in the moses basket for a while so that I could get used to it but if ds can stand that may not be a solution. Second the idea of rolled up towels/sheets etc down the side. Have heard of people doing that. I have this to come in a few weeks with dd who is also a good sleeper. Hope I'm not posting here then asking for the same help!
