Sleep

Naps at 16 months

My 16 month old has always liked his naps. He still has 2 a day for a total of 3-4 hours. However, he is getting harder to settle for his afternoon nap so I thought he was ready to go down to just one a day. The problem is he gets so tired in the morning.

He sleeps from 7pm-6am (usually sleeps through but sometimes a bit unsettled a couple of times overnight). He is then exhausted by 8-9am and has a 1.5-2 hour nap. He used to then go down for another nap at 2pm for 1-1.5 hours.

Now if I put him down for his 2pm nap he can take an hour or more to settle or sometimes I give up and he doesn't nap at all. I tried to drop him down to 1 nap at about 11am but he is so tired and cranky in the morning and if he sleeps for 2 hours he is obviously ready for a nap!

Has anybody had a similar problem? All suggestions gratefully received!

We had similar situation. So we dropped morning nap and just try and be as busy as possible in the morning - because DS would still go to sleep about 9 if offered chance.

So it works fine as long we get go so something. Then he is full of energy and lasts until midday (even 1 at nursery).

Sorry typos. We get out and do something otherwise he'd also be cranky. Lots of snacks helps too.

Think try sticking with it a couple weeks and LO should soon adjust.

Unfortunately it is just one of those things you have to ride out and put up with the crankiness for a while. I used to get out and about really early, then give a substantial snack at about 10.30/11 before a nap then the rest of lunch afterwards - and if necessary bring bedtime forward a little bit for a while. Good luck
