Clocks going back - wwyd about naps???

10mo DS wakes up every day at 6am on the dot. Normally has a morning nap at 9am (he is desperately tired by 9, can't push it any later).

With utter horror I have realised that now means he is going to be waking up at 5am when the clocks go back next weekend. And will consequently be desperate for a nap by 8am....this is going to fuck up his whole routine! If he naps at 8 he will be awake by 9 and then keeping him up until his 1.30pm nap will be impossible. And then he will nap early and end up going to bed at 6pm or something, and then the whole hideous process will be repeated the next day, and the next day, until the end of time, right??

Wise mummies who have done this before, please tell me there's a way to adapt nap routines to cope with the clocks changing??

No suggestions but watching with interest as my 6 month old likes to get up at 5. I'm pretending the clocks thing isn't happening. In fact I might refuse to do it!

Ha ha that's the best idea I have heard! Lets just stay on British Summer Time and pretend the whole thing isn't happening...! Xx

Wish I could! DS has refused to drink a single drop of formula since he was about 9months old :-/

I am pushing naps and bedtime back 10 mins every day this week. And letting them sleep longer for afternoon nap (I normally lift my twins at 3.15 at the latest) so tonight bedtime will be 7.20, with bath at 6.40. Bit of a pain losing my evenings this week but fingers crossed it will reduce the pain of early np mornings next week.

The nap thing hasn't worked quite so well for DTS who was up at 2.30 after his afternoon nap but he is better at staying up than his sister who gets v overtired these days.

That's a good idea about pushing the naps back. Will try tomorrow...annoyingly I think DS is cutting a molar AND having some kind of Wonde Week/developmental leap at the moment which means he is napping poorly and unreliably this week anyway! Ended up taking him on a 40 minute pointless drive round the ring road at 4pm yesterday so he could have a little cat nap to see him through till bedtime, as he decided to only have a. 35 minute sleep after lunch. I thought I had stopped all the deranged pointless driving when he got to 6mo...obviously not!

Yes, we have teeth too. Nightmare.

Don't let them sleep too late though! DTD had a mammoth 2.40 nap and refused to sleep til nearly 8! Should be alright for Sunday though ;-)

Whilst both my kids are much older now, we did go straight to the new time from day one every time the clocks changed. Or as close as possible, whilst making minor allowances, but nothing as organised as a staged 10min per day changeover. And it worked, at least I don't recall major ongoing disasters. Both were quite set in their routines but switched quite easily. On the other hand, when we went abroad for week, we just stayed on UK time for the kid's routine and that worked too.

We started 4 weeks ago pushing everything back 10 mins every 4/5 days or so. Slowly slowly. Hopefully wont be so bad. But I guess that doesn't really help.

We don't do a staggered change (eg ten mins later each day).

I just basically go with the new time and do everything, naps, food etc to the new time. It's worked for us so far (eldest is 3.5). But to be fair mine have perhaps not been in as firm a routine as yours sounds.

Regardless of how you do it though it will be fine! Eventually...

I think if this happens, no matter how hard it is at the time, just try and push him through to 9am (or 8.45?) for that first nap. If we've ever had to try and keep our DD awake for a little bit, we try taking her outside (weather might not allow this weekend!) giving her a little bit extra to eat to try and give her a little energy rush. If you can just do that one, you should manage to be on track again pretty quickly.
My plan for my almost 12mo , however, is just to go with the flow, hope for the best, and somewhere along the line I'll stretch an awake time and she'll be back on track within a day or two.

We have found it takes about a week to get the children back on track.

The best place to start is by adjusting the routine. If you can push everything by an hour then do it. If not do it as far as you can.

Change their bedtime routine to an hour later is enough for some children to adjust.
