What is the protocol on assigning threads to the Classics board?

Do they have to reach a certain threshold?

There's a couple of threads in there that I personally don't think should have gone in, but then again I'm not part of the decision-making process at MN HQ.

Do threads have to get nominated or is it something decided by whomever's on duty that day?

Hi AdrenalineFudge - if we've had a few nominations, we'll take a look and see what we think. It's generally if everyone has been enjoying the thread and it fits with older Classic threads.

Which particular threads do you feel perhaps weren't right for Classics?

I've commented in a dingbat outpouring way on Chat threads thinking, oh it doesn't matter it'll all be gone soon, and then it ends up in Classics forever.

Becca The wedding cheque thread and the colleague threw lunch in the bin thread. Probably most of Classics tbh but those are the most recent ones.

fudge

What would your criterion be for a Classic?

Binary I suppose it is largely subjective. There's a thread in there about a spray painted pigeon - that had me really laughing but I know that some didn't and don't consider it funny. I don't have a formula worked out but it shouldn't be a case of most looked at or most popular. It seems like someone can start a thread about any bizarre thing and if they reach over 500 replies then it's off in Classics. Even light-hearted threads by their very nature can make it into Classics like the one of the two dcs playing whilst their mother was in the bath. I don't believe that thread for one second but there you go.

Well, that's the problem, its all subjective, what you consider hilarious and read it out to their family and all have a proper giggle, the next poster it might raise a smile and they read it through, the next poster might just go Hmm, and the next poster might start a thread in Site Stuff announcing they don't think it should be in classics at all Grin Wink

I don't think (as Becca said) there area rigid SRT of criterion, just a whim on the part of MNHQ after a few nominations :)

I think over ten place markers should mean a thread never gets to Classics.

The Classics are surely sleek, unencumbered cultural joys. Not dozens of fucking dots and 'unashamedly marking my place tee hee's.

I agree with you about the cheque thread and the fridge thread.

Post after post of place marking does not a classic make.

Me too, absolutely!

Yes, it's tricky because it is so subjective.

This feedback is all really useful - thanks everyone for posting.
