NC then changing back to a used-before name

I want to ask a question that will out me for sure so wanting to NC. If I do this can I go back to my previous username after? Or will it be lost forever and have to think of a new one?

Just to add that you can change your nickname from thread to thread. Some users have one name they use for serious stuff and another for fun stuff. Or even change names every week, etc. Others like to be 'known' and use one name all the time.
