Sorry, Mumsnet, I'm really not happy about these appearing at the top and side of Mumsnet pages I'm on.

Why? Nobody's making you have one.

Does anyone else use your computer? The ads on my mumsnet tend to relate to things I've been googling.

Use an ad blocker?

So, OP, who's been googling abortions on your computer?
Ps they aren't obligatory.

Hi there cheapskatemum

Could you send us a screen shot of the ad please, and we'll take a closer look.

Presumably it's another AdChoice advert?

Yy I thought adverts usually relate to what you've recently googled. I tend to mostly get weddingy adverts as I'm googling a LOT of wedding stuff at the moment.

I've been trying to 'provoke' one of those ads by Googling private abortions. Still nothing popped up. I wonder if the OP has been reading a few threads on this subject?

Hi, sorry only just thought to check this thread I started. They have now stopped. That is very interesting though, DS1 has been Facetiming his girlfriend a lot - we are on holiday in USA. Thanks for the tip off - I'll have a chat with him.

DS1 in the clear, will check with other DSs, just in case it was them, but all have their own devices for accessing internet with them. whoatealltheeggs if any appear again I will need simple instructions on how to take a screenshot as I am not IT savvy at all. Thank you for your consideration of my post, I do appreciate it.

This type of issue comes up quite regularly on Mumsnet.
I've posted the following advice before under different names

Have you been googling anything vaguely related or might you have anything in your browsing history related to pregnancy. It's not just based on things you have searched for. Google monitors what your 'interests' are and then displays what it thinks are relevant adverts just for you. The are called 'interest based' adverts.

To stop it happening again I would firstly clear out my cookies and search history. (I'm not actually sure this is necessary but it doesn't do any harm )

If you go to GOOGLE ad preferences you can opt out of interest based adverts on Google AND across the web.

I have done this. It means I just get generic ads instead. I have to opt out again, when I delete my cookies.

If you use an ipad or iphone with ios7 you can also TURN ON 'Limit Ad Tracking'

Settings>>Privacy>>>>Advertising>>. Toggle Limit Ad Tracking On

You can also turn off location based ad's if you use ios7 (this will stop Apple tracking where you are and using the info to send you spammy ads ad's from nearby businesses.

Settings>>>>Privacy>>>>location services >>>>(scroll right down to the bottom of the page)) system services >>> then TOGGLE OFF 'Location-based iAds.

HERE is more info about how to opt out of interest based advertising on other search engines, Facebook and twitter etc.

AreWeThereYet thanks, those were simple enough for me to follow and I do have ios7 and use iphone , ipad and ipadmini. However, I haven't been googling or reading anything remotely connected to birth, pregnancy or abortions.

The ad's can be based on what pages you have viewed so it could be just from viewing pages containing certain words rather than your search history IYSWIM. (mumsnet pages???). I am glad you managed to change your settings though.

Ive just noticed I forgot to include the links in my last post.

GOOGLE AD PREFERENCES opt out
