When do year 11's officially leave school?

Dd is 15 almost 16, in the throes of GCSE's.She is currently on study leave & only has to go in for exams. We've had a letter from school saying they have to go in for a day in July, to hand back books etc. If they don't they won't be able to collect their results. Dd is adamant she is not going back, she's been the subjected to an ongoing bullying campaign this last year. I've told her I'll phone in sick for her. Is it true, can the school withhold results?

Surely going in on that day is just a matter of collecting an envelope and dropping off the books? How many bullying opportunities will there be in that scenario?

I'd mail the HOY if I were you to double check she can just nip in and out.

Perhaps they have a lot of books going AWOL as kids never bother to go back so they this rule in place. When does she plan to return them?

As she finished school then it probably wont be a full day anyway.

I would return the books etc on the day of the last exam and then she can phone through for the results in August or have someone else collect them.

They've been told they have to go in for the day, leavers assembly & high jinksetc. She won't go back, and I don't blame her. I was going to phone in on her behalf and if they need a letter to verify her absence I'll send a copy to the HOY & the headmaster explaining in detail why she refused to attend. I'm concerned about the threat to withold the GCSE results.

Assuming the school know about the bullying, I'm sure they don't mean to hold her to being there for the day - it will just be a general threat to make sure they mostly bother to come in.

I would phone and say that, in the circumstances, she won't be in for that day, and what would they like to do about the books and results?

But the results come out in the holidays ,after the end of term don't they ?
How can they insist a pupil goes in to get them ?
In our area they either choose to collect in person ,or leave a SAE for them to be posted .

They get to find out earlier than if they're posted. School opens 10-12 on results day.

But it's after the school year has finished ,they can't insist pupils go in or they'll withhold results .
Could you not just get them posted ?

Dd wants to go to school to collect them because there will be the support & information if she needs it. It looks like it's just her school that threatens to withhold the results. I suppose if needs be I just take her in to collect the results & face them then.

Is school officially over for year 11's once the exams are over?

I don't know - which is silly ,should be a no brainer shouldn't it ?
I think if the school has a sixth form and they're staying on ,then pupils probably have to go in to start preparations for AS or other courses .
But if no sixth form /pupil not staying on ,then school finishes when last exam done .
What does school say ? Have they got website you could refer to ?

AFAIK,a school cannot withold results in that way. It's probably just a way of making sure that Yr 11s bring back borrowed books and so on. It's a shame your DD doesn't feel that she can go in for leaver's assembly, but I can completely understand why.

Make sure the school knows if she's not going to show though - just to be sure.

At my school, we do use the threat of not releasing exam results until all books are returned. This is due to the high number of books that were simply never returned at the end of the year.
as far as my school goes, our year 11's are on study leave and as they take the last exam in English, maths etc they return the text book, get the relevant part of the form signed and once all the form is signed, its returned to Head of year 11 and then thats it!

The results come out in August and will only be released to the pupil at the careers office on the day, written permission has to be given by the pupil if a parent is going to collect, otherwise a large s.a.e is left with Head of year for the results to be posted on.

If you go to collect the results on the day and you've not returned all text books then you can return them there and then and get results or we do hold onto them.

In the case of your dd, you could collect all the texts that she needs to return and take them back to school before the end of term and then the school would have no terms to hold onto her results. Then she could miss the last day, assembly etc.She wouldn't need to go into school to get them, although we have an advice area open for those students who didn't quite get the grades they needed to move onto A levels etc. You could always go with her to get the results, its normally takes 10mins so no chance for any bullying (and she'd prob need a lift into school to get them anyway!)

I wish your daughter well in her exams and I'm sure if the school are aware of the bullying they will be sympathetic and help her and you

BTW we've never had to withold any results so have no idea if the school really can do that, I know that colleges and Uni's can!

Id get them posted .
My DS never goes in for his ,apart from miles away ,the opportunity for peers to make unkind comparisons about who got what is just too great .
It may only take 10 mins to pick them up ,but those teenagers don't evaporate once they leave the school doors .

When DD3 finished year 11. They had thier leavers celebration which parents were invited to in May before the exams started, They also officialy finished school except for going in for the exams. Her school did have a 6th form but those staying on weren't expected to go back until September.
