Opinions on box hill school and royal russell

DS currently in Y5 and prep school head has suggested these 2 schools amoung others as possible options for him at 13. We will be arranging visits to all the schools he recommended.

DS bright, sporty, loves all subjects (hisory, science in particular), enjoys art and he is also dyslexic. His ed psych support described him as seriously dyslexic. With right support he is making very good progress. Atrocious spelling, hand writing etc! Slow reading but close to age level I guess. He's fine in mainstream school with right support - currently gets a couple of pull out sessions but no additional support in class and that's fine.

We and Head leave ruled out Epsom College, St John's and Reeds due to pretest. He would be unlikely to do well enough if he sat it Jan 2016, and even if he was ready by 13, feel it would be better for him not to be potentially struggling at bottom of cohort for his whole school career. That type of school is the kind he would enjoy though - so looking for similar school with a broader intake.

Welcome any comments on Box Hill and Royal Russell.

Also Does anyone know if RR has Sat school?

TIA

I know nothing about Box Hill but know a couple of children who've gone to RR

In both cases I'm v glad my dad is not having to share a classroom with them so I do wonder about their admissions process - lovely grounds and facilities though

Are you looking for a boarding or day place?

Box Hill seems to have a larger proportion of boarders than RR, and about half the number of pupils.

RR doesn't have Saturday school - but there will be plenty of sports fixtures then.

Go and have a look at both of them. They would probably arrange a tour in advance of their open days.

Camptown races - probably day but if he went to RR we'd either move closer or he might weekly board as we are about an hour away.

At RR most of the boarders join higher up the school, and seem to be dominated by overseas students. They do provide some dyslexia support, but you should talk to them about the severity of your DS's dyslexia as they are quite open about what they can/can't do. Any additional support - including lesson withdrawal - may potentially come as an extra cost (irrespective of school), so it's worth checking.

You may also want to consider Moon Hall College, a specialist dyslexia school near Leigh (off the A25), depending on whether or not you find a mainstream option that suits your DS.
