Does he have to go to 6th form college at his current school or can he do A levels at the local college? I keep asking him to find out and he just says he forgot, I also tried ringing the school but no one ahs got back to me yet

When I left school 5 years ago we could choose between any 6th form or college in the area as long as we met the grades needed, most stayed on at secondary schools sixth form though Smile

Our lot went to a sixth form. Free to leave!

Of course he can go elsewhere! However he may have missed the deadline for application by now....

He needs to apply for his school's sixth form, as well as any others he might fancy. He doesn't get in automatically!

He might have (probably) missed application deadlines, but that doesn't mean he can't still apply, unless it's heavily over-subscribed. Bums on seats bring in money.

He can apply to his school 6th form or any other school's 6th form (assuming they take boys) or go to college. Entirely up to him to choose.

Its late in the day to be applying for 6th forms although his current school would probably not mind, my FE college take applications up until the start of term - colleges are able to be a lot more flexible than schools

As others have said, it is up to him where he wants to study after Year 11.
He could study A levels at a different school's sixth form, or at a local FE college. Look at their websites for prospectuses & application deadlines.

Alternatively, he could consider a vocational course such as a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma, equivalent to A level standard, and also potentially leading to university. Or, a Level 3 Apprenticeship. These are starting to be advertised now, and some have early closing dates.

I'll repeat, so you can be reassured.

He can go anywhere that runs a programme of study he is interested in.

FE colleges don't have cut off dates for applications - we enrol up to and often past the first week or two of September. Before GCSE results is appreciated though.

He should apply for school sixth form, just in case.

If school says different (as one round here is still doing) shout up and don't let them bully you.

I suspect he has had information but not passed it on to you?
All schools and sixth form colleges hold open evenings for prospective students and their parents to look around. They start in October. We took DS to three last autumn, he is also in Y11.
Not too late though as often you can go later. I suggest you find out where all the sixth forms and colleges are around you and look on their websites.
You can apply to more than one and only commit at the enrolment stage in August after GCSE results.

DD has an offer from a local collage and school deadline (which will be her insurance as they will take a C for English) is end Feb.

However, I get a strong feeling most places will look at late applicants and in August their will be movement as pupils find they have/haven't/have better grades and swap courses and institutions.
