How many Gcses does the 'average child achieve

Trying to work out what DS1's potential is in terms of what he might get at GCSE.Sorry I know there are all sorts of factors to take into account. I know what the expected levels are at ks1, 2 and 3 but, for example do kids working at the expected levels get good formal qualifications? Or is it only those working above the expected levels that get A* GCSEs?

I suppose I really want to know if he needs extra support in his weaker subjects in particular maths even though he is in line with expected targets if he wants to get a GCSE in this subject for example.

We were told a KS3 level 5 gives a 25% chance of a C+ and a level 6 a 75% chance of a C+; many get B. Children getting level 7's/8's should be working at the high grades. All based on averages.

However, they emphisised that it's all about application over the two GCSE years and focus as well. Whilst unlikely a level 7 at KS3 won't get a C+, they'll still have to work to get the A/A*. It won't just happen.

Also, whilst not many level 5's get the really high grades, they can if they work hard and apply themselves - especially if they were 5A at KS3 rather than 5C (i.e actually nearly a level 6).

Thanks Kez

That helps put it into perspective.
