...do you think there would have been fewer threads about 'casual' affairs or betrayals? I'm just looking at all the threads that have to do with mobile phones, chatrooms etc and am wondering what this kind of man or woman did before things were made so easy by technology. If there was a landline in the home and nothing else, were 'betrayals' (not affairs obviously, as I believe they've always happened) less common? (Apparently Facebook was mentioned in one third of divorce claims in the U.S.) Apologies if this has been discussed before.

No. Back in the day, wives and husbands were forever finding letters to/from the OW or OM hidden in drawers or in wallets and handbags. It would have been just the same except the guilty party couldn't have tried the "It's only a pop-up - I'm not on a dating site really" defence.
